Colin Farrell Playing Oliver North in Amazon Miniseries

Colin Farrell has been all about the big screen recently, with a starring role in Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, and the recent news that he may be joining Denzel Washington in the upcoming legal drama Inner City. Although Farrell will not reprise his role in the magical world of Harry Potter, he does have several other films in the works. The actor will also be appearing alongside Nicole Kidman and Elle Fanning in The Beguiled, and with Nicole Kidman a second time in The Killing Of A Sacred Deer, both set for a release later this year.

Now, it looks like Farrell will return to the small screen in the near future, as the actor has signed on to a new political drama project for Amazon.

As reported by Variety, Farrell will star in an upcoming Amazon miniseries about the Iran-Contra scandal of the '80s. The series will be directed by Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster), with Farrell playing the part of Oliver North, the former U.S. Marine who was a key player in the scandal. The series will reportedly be scripted by Enzo Mileti and Scott Wilson, with Ben Stiller and Nicky Weinstock producing for Red Hour Films.

Farrell and Lanthimos have worked together already, on The Lobster in 2015, as well as on the upcoming The Killing Of A Sacred Deer, so it's not too much of a surprise that this team would come back together for the director's latest project. Physically, Farrell also bears a strong resemblance to the real Oliver North, which is also an important consideration when casting actors to play figures from the real world.

This looks like it will be a fascinating series, bringing the Iran-Contra Affair to a new audience who may well have been too young (or not yet around) in the '80s when the scandal broke. North was on the National Security Council at the time, and involved in the illegal sale of weapons and funneling of money to the Contras group.

At the moment, the series is still in development, although it looks like all systems are go now that a lead actor has been attached to the project, along with the director, writers and producers. You can look forward to hearing more news as the cast is filled out, and as a title and release date for the production are revealed.
