Irish actor Colin Farrell has been an ever-present star in Hollywood over the last two decades, but what are his best and his worst movies? Having played leading roles in smaller-budget movies since 1999, Farrell gained international recognition after appearing in Steven Spielberg's Minority Report alongside Tom Cruise. He continued to star in a range of independent films and blockbusters throughout the 2000s and 2010s and is one of the most sought-after actors today.

Colin Farrell is best known for his roles in action, crime, and comedy movies, with his natural cheeky charisma often landing the Dublin native roles as the lovable rogue. But by no means is Farrell a one-note actor, as he has proven throughout his career that he can turn his talents toward drama, romance, and horror. Farrell shows no sign of slowing down, with the actor most recently appearing in contrasting roles in the superhero box office hit The Batman and the acclaimed, smaller-scale The Banshees of Inisherin. With that in mind, here is every Colin Farrell movie, ranked in order from the worst to the best.

51 Artemis Fowl (2020)

Artemis Fowl
  • Stream on Disney+

With Oscar-winner Kenneth Branagh at the helm and a popular source material, Artemis Fowl had the potential to be the next Harry Potter. Instead, the movie was a notorious flop. The messy adaptation of Eoin Colfer's fantasy novel is a difficult-to-follow adventure through worlds, centered around the titular Artemis Fowl trying to recover the Aculos — an ancient artifact that is the source of fairy magic — and rescue his father, played by Farrell. While Artemis Fowl is a villain in the books, the movie's choice to soften the young protagonist proved to be a misguided change that resulted in a dull adaptation that alienated fans.

50 Alexander (2004)

Colin Farrell as Alexander the Great in Alexander looking at something
  • Rent on iTunes

Featuring one of Colin Farrell's earliest leading roles in a big-budget production, Alexander is a retelling of Alexander the Great's life. Supported by an all-star cast including Angelina Jolie, Anthony Hopkins, and Val Kilmer, Alexander is a historic epic that is ambitious in scope but fails to grab viewers' attention because of its lack of emotion and its three-hour run time. Alexander was nominated for six Golden Raspberry Awards in 2005, including Worst Actor for Colin Farrell, turning what could have been a breakout role for Farrell into an embarrassing failure.

49 Winter's Tale (2012)

A New York Winter's Tale
  • Stream on Hoopla

Set in 20th-century New York, Winter's Tale is a romantic fantasy movie starring Colin Farrell as a burglar who falls for the woman whose house he breaks into. Winter's Tale fast-forwards to the 21st century when Farrell's character magically remains the same age as he searches for his love. While Farrell gives a solid performance alongside Academy Award winners Will Smith and Russell Crowe, the convoluted plot and lack of emotional depth hold Winter's Tale back, and it subsequently became one of Farrell's biggest box office failures, grossing just $30 million against a $75 million budget.

48 American Outlaws (2001)

  • No streaming options available

American Outlaws is a Western with Colin Farrell portraying Jesse James. After returning from the Civil War, the notorious 19th-century American outlaw and the rest of the James-Younger gang carry out several robberies aimed at railroad baron Thaddeus Rains, who wants the Missouri natives to leave their homes. Some of the best Westerns of the 21st century managed to keep the genre alive but American Outlaws' attempts to appeal to the teenage crowd did the genre no favor in gaining popularity. Lackluster action scenes couldn't be saved by Farrell's committed yet miscast performance.

47 Ava (2020)

  • Stream on Netflix

From Tate Taylor, director of the original The Girl on the Train, Ava is a hit-woman movie featuring Colin Farrell as the big bad, Simon. Ava's predictable storyline follows the titular assassin being hunted by her own shady organization after she starts listening to her conscience and dismissing orders. Despite boasting an excellent cast, including Farrell, Jessica Chastain, and John Malkovich, the unoriginal script doesn't give them much to play with. Still, Farrell's dastardly villain is the highlight of Ava as he elevates his scenes in what otherwise is a by-the-numbers action movie.

46 Pride And Glory (2008)

Colin Farrell in Pride and Glory
  • Rent on iTunes

Pride and Glory is a police drama featuring an ensemble cast led by Colin Farrell, Jon Voight, and Edward Norton. A family of New York City police detectives is torn apart when a group of cops is killed, and Ray (Norton) suspects his brother-in-law Jimmy (Farrell) has something to do with it. Pride and Glory attempts to expose the greed and corruption of the U.S. police force but instead turns into a cliché crime drama with no likable characters to root for. Farrell once again is a bright spot in an otherwise forgettable movie playing a complex character with shades of evil yet still sympathetic.

45 Solace (2015)

Colin Farrell in Solace
  • Stream on Netflix and Prime Video

Solace is a mystery thriller about a doctor with psychic abilities (Anthony Hopkins) who teams up with an FBI agent (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) to take down a serial killer (Colin Farrell). The movie takes an interesting turn when it is revealed that Farrell's criminal character is killing people with terminal illnesses to save them from a slow death. Although Hopkins, Morgan, and Farrell give reasonable performances, Solace never lives up to its intriguing plot twist, and director Afonso Poyart's choppy editing makes for a regular distraction.

44 Ask the Dust (2006)

Colin Farrell in Ask the Dust
  • Stream on Starz

Set during the Great Depression, Ask the Dust follows Arturo (Colin Farrell), a writer who moves to L.A. to kickstart his career as a novelist. The romantic drama sees Arturo fall in love with Camilla (Salma Hayek), a Mexican waitress who wasn't the type of woman he imagined being with. Farrell gives a nuanced performance as Arturo, outwardly projecting false confidence while being inwardly insecure, but the slow-paced romance is ultimately one of his more forgettable movies.

43 Cassandra's Dream (2007)

Colin Farrell in Cassandra's Dream
  • Stream on Tubi

Cassandra's Dream is a thriller that sees Colin Farrell and Ewan McGregor playing brothers. The two buy a boat after winning big at the greyhound races, but then they unwittingly name the boat after the winning dog, "Cassandra's Dream," not knowing that in Greek mythology, the Trojan priestess Cassandra was known for her prophecies of tragedy that went ignored by everyone. Cassandra's Dream's brotherly dynamic doesn't work well because of the lack of chemistry between McGregor and Farrell making for one of the most forgettable of Woody Allen's movies.

42 Daredevil (2003)

Colin Farrell as Bullseye in Daredevil movie
  • Stream on HBO Max

Colin Farrell made his first outing as a supervillain in Daredevil. Starring Ben Affleck as the titular masked vigilante of Hell's Kitchen, Daredevil pits Matt Murdoch against Wilson Fisk (Michael Clarke Duncan) and Bullseye (Farrell), in what is often cited as one of the worst superhero movies because of its hammy drama. Like the rest of Daredevil, Farrell's performance as Bullseye is over-the-top and his character is given a terrible look, best remembered for the bullseye scar on his forehead. Though there were Daredevil sequel plans following its decent box office success, the fan reaction ended the franchise at one movie.

41 Ordinary Decent Criminal (2000)

Christoph Waltz and Colin Farrell in Ordinary Decent Criminal
  • Rent on iTunes

Ordinary Decent Criminal is inspired by Martin Cahill, an Irish crime boss who led several heists in Dublin. Michael Lynch (Kevin Spacey) and his team, including Alec (Colin Farrell), gain notoriety for theatrically stealing a number of priceless paintings, with their next plot being to swipe Caravaggio's "The Taking of Christ." Like its name, Ordinary Decent Criminal is a fairly ordinary crime movie with no huge thrills, given that the majority of the cast attempts shaky Irish accents throughout, Farrell is an easy standout in the ensemble.

40 Hart's War (2002)

Colin Farrell as Lieutenant Thomas Hart in Hart's War.
  • Stream on Tubi

Taking place during World War II, Hart's War stars Colin Farrell alongside action movie star Bruce Willis. Lieutenant Thomas Hart (Farrell) is captured by German forces and becomes a prisoner of war, and then the movie turns into a courtroom drama. Hart's War is well acted but tries to juggle several war themes, including the duty and sacrifice of soldiers, and falls apart because of its multiple subplots. The movie is another of Farrell's box office bombs, grossing just $33 million compared to its $70 million budget.

39 Total Recall (2012)

Total Recall remake Collin Farrell
  • Stream on AMC+

A remake of the Arnold Schwarzenegger classic, Total Recall stars Colin Farrell as Douglas Quaid, a seemingly normal citizen who is later revealed to be rogue agent Carl Hauser, who had his memories replaced. Total Recall creates an impressive futuristic world and boasts excellent sci-fi action scenes that rival the original movie. Despite that, the much more serious tone of the remake compared to the original Total Recall's mind-bending action sci-fi approach makes it the inferior adaptation of Phillip K. Dick's novel because it lacks the fun and charm of the 1990 movie.

38 Dead Man Down (2013)

Victor and Beatrice at the subway in Dead Man Down
  • Stream on Tubi

Dead Man Down stars Colin Farrell as Victor, a man who infiltrates a New York City gang to get revenge on the crime lord Alphonse (Terrence Howard) who killed his family. Victor is joined by Beatrice (Noomi Rapace), who wants to use his deadly skills to also hunt down the man who disfigured her. As is often the case, Farrell's performance is far better than the script deserves. It ends up being a surprisingly bland revenge story that makes some big leaps of logic in the finale that result in an anti-climactic ending.

37 Voyagers (2021)

Colin Farrell in Voyagers
  • Stream on Hulu

From Neil Burger, Voyagers is a science fiction thriller often compared to William Golding's novel The Lord of the Flies but set in space. The movie follows a group of young astronauts who are sent on a mission to colonize a distant planet. As chaos ensues on their ship, mission commander Richard (Colin Farrell) attempts to keep order. Voyagers toys with interesting ideas of maturity and tribalism, but doesn't bring anything new to the doomed space mission sub-genre. A talented young cast injects some spark into the story while Farrell is mostly wasted in a supporting role.

36 The Recruit (2003)

Colin Farrell in The Recruit
  • Rent on iTunes

Colin Farrell had the opportunity to share the screen with one of the greatest actors of all time. Unfortunately, The Recruit is not one of Al Pacino's best movies. The spy movie starring Colin Farrell opposite Al Pacino. James Clayton (Farrell) is an atypical CIA recruit whom Walker Burke (Pacino) wants at the agency because he knew James's father. The Recruit's opening act sets it up to be an engaging and authentic thriller, with a look inside the intense training these agents are subjected to. However, the movie fell apart for most people with a third act filled with too many twists that were too obvious to see coming.

35 Dumbo (2019)

Finley Hobbins, Nico Parker, and Colin Farrell in Dumbo
  • Stream on Disney+

Continuing Disney's streak of live-action remakes, Colin Farrell stars in Dumbo as Holt, a circus performer who is the carer of the big-eared baby elephant. Like in the 1941 animated classic, when it is revealed that Dumbo can fly he becomes a popular attraction, one that V.A. Vandevere (Michael Keaton) is keen to exploit. Tim Burton's sharp direction makes Dumbo visually spectacular, but the story lacks the emotional pull and fun of Disney's original.

34 Miss Julie (2014)

  • Rent on iTunes

Based on August Strindberg's 1888 romantic play of the same name, Miss Julie stars Jessica Chastain as the title character, the daughter of an Irish Baron. She tries to seduce her father's servant (Colin Farrell) in the period drama, which centers around the theme of classism. Miss Julie's tragic ending is an exciting shift in tone from the earlier romantic scenes, but the movie's pacing is hindered by regular flashbacks that don't add much to the story. Among the stronger aspects of the movie, Farell and Chastain share solid chemistry together.

33 Veronica Guerin (2003)

Cate Blanchett talking to Colin Farrell in Veronica Guerin.
  • Stream on Hoopla

Fresh off The Lord of the Rings, Cate Blanchett stars in Veronica Guerin as the titular investigative journalist who seeks to expose those responsible for Dublin's illegal drug trade. It's a typical and forgettable crime drama that relies solely on Blanchett's talents. Colin Farrell makes a brief cameo appearance as an unnamed man whom Guerin talks to at a sports event. Blanchett gives a grounded and strong performance as an overlooked hero while the drama is a solid look at Guerin's impactful work.

32 A Home At The End Of The World (2004)

Two people embracing in A Home At The End Of The World
  • No streaming options currently available

A Home at the End of the World stars Colin Farrell as Bobby, one-third of an unconventional relationship. The trio deals with jealousy between the two men in the relationship while Clare (Robin Wright) wants the family to have a baby. The movie also explores homosexuality and AIDS in the 1980s, toeing the line between being heartfelt and superficial. Farrell's role was vastly different from anything in his career to this point, and while he's miscast as the innocent Bobby, he shows he can do more than just crime movies.
