Netflix Picks Up Coen Brothers' Ballad of Buster Scruggs TV Series

The Coen Brothers on the Hail, Caesar! set

The latest word on The Ballad of Buster Scruggs has the Coen brothers production headed to Netflix. Following the start of filming on the forthcoming Western anthology series, all eyes are on the critically acclaimed filmmaking duo as work on their first small screen opus gets underway.

After assembling a cast of lead actors for the new show - most notably including Tim Blake Nelson, Zoe Kazan, Tyne Daly, Stephen Root, Ralph Ineson, and James Franco - fans of the Coen brothers have plenty to look forward to. With season 4 of the Noah Hawley created Fargo TV series potentially years away, it would appear that the next Coen brothers production for the small screen will be The Ballad of Buster Scruggs - and the latest word has a distributor for the production firmly in place.

According to Variety, Netflix has just secured the rights to distributing The Ballad of Buster Scruggs. In a joint statement, the Coen brothers proclaimed, "We are streaming, motherf-ers," in a move that will see the high caliber directors join the ranks of such fellow premiere filmmakers as the Wachowski sisters, who also made the move to the popular streaming service with the production of Sense8.

Jeff Bridges in True Grit

Speaking to the enthusiasm held for distributing the Coen brothers' TV production, Cindy Holland, the vice president of original content for Netflix, had this to say of the company's decision to pick up The Ballad of Buster Scruggs:

"The Coens are visionary directors, masterful storytellers, and colorful linguists. We are thrilled for Netflix to become home to the full range of their talents."

It's definitely exciting to hear that The Ballad of Buster Scruggs is headed to Netflix. And with the Coen brothers firmly situated as the executive producers, writers, and directors of the anthology series, the Western genre is about to receive another facelift from two of the most beloved American filmmakers following their work on the Oscar nominated True Grit from 2010. On that note, here's to hoping for the very best from the new series.
