What could be the final update for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and its modern flavor of the Warzone battle royale standalone drops tonight, and Season 6 will include several new maps and modes for multiplayer. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is 2019's iteration of the popular first-person shooter franchise from Activision, rebooting Infinity Ward's groundbreaking 2007 release for a new generation. With Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War releasing this holiday alongside the next generation of Xbox and PlayStation, Activision has promised that Call of Duty: Warzone will continue to evolve alongside the new release, tying this year's game in with Modern Warfare.

This also means that unlocks players earn in Call of Duty: Warzone, both in past seasons and this last one, will be usable in Warzone after Black Ops: Cold War hits store shelves. Call of Duty has a long history of yearly releases that start over from scratch, including 2018's battle royale mode Blackout inside Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. This will be the first time that Activision connects separate games in the franchise and builds over years, a precedent that could point Call of Duty into the territory of popular service games like its primary Warzone competition, Epic Games' Fortnite.

When players load up Call of Duty: Modern Warfare at the beginning of Season 6, Activision shares that they'll see several new options at their disposal on September 28 at 11 PM PT/September 29 at 2 AM ET. For Warzone players, a fast travel system is coming to Verdansk in the form of an underground subway location known as the "Metro." Verdansk will also receive a weapon rotation that will mix familiar armaments with new blueprint weapons, including 24 Legendary variants. There's also a new way to drop into Warzone called Armored Royale, which spawns squads in an armored cargo truck complete with a gun turret. As long as the truck remains alive, players can continue to respawn, so combat continues until there's only one last truck standing.

As far as regular multiplayer updates go, Season Six has plenty to experience. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will receive four new maps as part of the update, each one covering different styles of engagement. New gametypes are also arriving, including "Killstreak Confirmed," which ties in the franchise's famous missile launches and UAVs with collecting the dog tags from Kill Confirmed. As the season overlaps with the Halloween season, players will get to experience an event called The Haunting of Verdansk from October 20 to November 2. Details are scarce as to what the entails, but the Season Six battle pass is full of spooky cosmetic items to earn in advance of the holiday celebration.

With the next Call of Duty on the verge of release, Season Six of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone is an impressive update that will keep players entertained right up until the new game is ready. While some are intrigued as to what Call of Duty will look like on new hardware, the more intriguing prospect is to see how Activision's efforts to connect their games turns out, and how Call of Duty releases will be handled as the years go on. Considering their ongoing audience, a single launcher with constant content drops could be a huge boost to the game's profile, even if the publisher has seemed hesitant to adopt such a model. With a new generation weeks away from launch and huge, industry-shaking news hitting the web on an almost weekly basis, who knows what the future holds.
