A new Gulag mechanic is coming to Warzone 2, and it's set to turn enemies into allies. Warzone 2 is the newest installment of Call of Duty's battle royale game and is following in the footsteps of Call of Duty: Warzone which released in 2020. Now that Warzone 2's release date has been revealed, hype for the next iteration of CoD's popular battle royale title is sure to increase.

With the success of other battle royale games, Warzone's popularity comes as no surprise. Call of Duty has been a staple in the first-person shooter world since its debut in 2003 and the introduction of a battle royale mode in the wake of Fortnite and PUBG's success led to inevitable acclaim. While there have been controversies as the game has evolved - particularly with the release of the Pacific Caldera map following the launch of Call of Duty: Vanguard - Warzone is still hugely popular and has cemented its position in the genre thanks to an array of event crossovers and new cosmetics, many of which have spotlighted key movie characters like Rambo, the T-800, and even Leatherface from the Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Warzone progress won't carry over to Warzone 2, which while potentially frustrating for longtime players, should provide a level playing field in the sequel.

As reported by Twinfinite the CoD: NEXT showcase, which premiered on the Call of Duty YouTube channel, showed off the next feature in Warzone 2 which is going to be an updated Gulag mechanic that makes players collaborate with enemies in order to escape. Players will be put with an opponent in order to get out and they must work together in order to be successful. The proximity chat will be available for players to use in order to discuss what their options are and how they want to approach the enemy team. The twist is once the players are free, they turn back into enemies and only the last player standing will win.

Warzone 2's New Gulag Mechanic Adds A Fresh Twist On Battle Royale Gameplay

With classic maps possibly returning for Warzone 2, players who have not played in a while might be enticed to jump back in especially to test out the new Gulag mechanic. Another new element that was discussed during the showcase was the inclusion of AI players. This means that players will not only have to be on high alert for their human opponents and be wary of their teammates, but they will also have to worry about an AI enemy attacking them. According to the showcase, even more is in the works for the Gulag, with more details expected to arrive before Warzone 2's launch in November.

Call of Duty's shifting focus to battle royale has proven hugely popular since 2019, and while there is still a great degree of excitement regarding the multiplayer modes for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Warzone still seems to be receiving the bulk of attention. There are reportedly even more new features for Warzone 2, including another rename and update, and more that the team has been working on that wasn't revealed during the showcase.
