Disney/Pixar's Day of the Dead movie Coco scored a lively opening day at the domestic box office Wednesday, enough to push it past last weekend's champ Justice League. The holiday moviegoing season officially got underway Wednesday, with the release of Disney/Pixar's latest animated fantasy and the Charles Dickens-themed biographical comedy drama The Man Who Invented Christmas, as well as the expansion of the Denzel Washington legal thriller Roman J. Israel, Esq.

Both films, however, are facing stiff competition with Justice League, which scored $94 million in its opening frame last weekend. However, since Justice League performed below its opening weekend projects of $110 million to $120 million (making it the lowest debut for a DCEU film yet), the superhero movie's time at the top of the domestic box office is expected to be short-lived.

According to THR, Coco opened with $13 million in ticket sales at the domestic box office Wednesday (including $2.3 million in Tuesday night previews) in 3,987 theaters. Justice League, by contrast, earned  $10.5 million in 4,051 theaters for a second-place finish for the day. To date, Justice League has earned $122.4 million stateside.

Over the five-day holiday frame, Coco is expected to gross more than $70 million domestically, while Justice League is expected to bring in about $62 million. The Julia Roberts-Jacob Tremblay drama Wonder, which opened with a $27 million in ticket sales last weekend, took in an estimated $6 million in 3,140 theaters for a third-place finish Wednesday, and is expected to gross $38 million over the five-day holiday frame.

Expanding nationwide to 1,648 theaters after opening earlier in limited release in New York and Los Angeles, Roman J. Israel, Esq., is only expected to take in $5 million in its first five days of wide release. It finished 11th place on the domestic chart Wednesday with an estimated $755,000 gross. Coming in 12th Wednesday was The Man Who Invented Christmas, which grossed an estimated $200,000 on 532 screens.

It shouldn't come as a huge surprise that Coco is expected to seize the Thanksgiving weekend box office. Disney/Pixar's films have generally owned the holiday moviegoing weekend, holding 9 of the 10 spots for the highest-grossing Thanksgiving weekend releases of all time.

While Disney's Frozen tops the chart after grossing $67.3 million over Thanksgiving weekend in 2013, it appears it will lose its No. 1 ranking if Coco's holiday weekend estimate holds up. Lucky for moviegoers, they're getting a bit of Frozen served up with the piping hot Coco, since the new, 22-minute animated short film Olaf’s Frozen Adventure - complete with new songs from voice stars Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell and Josh Gad - is playing before the Disney/Pixar feature.
