Sylvester Stallone has teased the possibility of a Cobra TV show spinoff, but will it happen? Stallone was at the peak of his star power during the 1980s, where he had dual franchises with the Rocky and Rambo characters. He tried to nab one more iconic action hero with Cobra, where he plays a cop who goes up against a whole team of serial killers. The movie was basically Stallone's take on Dirty Harry, but with a significantly higher bodycount.

Cobra was a sizable hit back in 1986, but surprisingly, it never spawned a sequel. Stallone has revisited many of his old franchises over the years and even added more to his CV with The Expendables movies or the Escape Plan trilogy. Cobra seemed destined to remain a one-and-done for the star, but in recent years, he's talked up the possibility of revisiting the property in some form.

Sylvester Stallone seems busier than even in his career, so there's no guarantee a Cobra revival will happen. Here's all we know about the potential follow-up.

The New Cobra Will Be A Streaming Series

Stallone first mentioned the possibility of more Cobra at Cannes in 2019. The star mentioned the show would follow the "Zombie Squad," which in the film is a division of the LAPD that takes on the messy/violent jobs that no other police officers want. Oddly, Stallone made it sound like Cobra wouldn't actually be part of the series, stating "I'm long gone," suggesting the show would follow the squad and not his character.

Sylvester Stallone Is Working With Robert Rodriquez On The Cobra Series

Sylvester Stallone updated the project in September 2019, revealing to Fandango that he's working with Robert Rodriguez on the project; the duo previously collaborated on Spy Kids 3-D. In addition to revealing it "... looks like that could happen," he also stated the project was Rodriguez's "baby." The director previously helmed a TV adaptation of his own cult horror movie From Dusk Till Dawn, which ran for three seasons.

Again, Stallone offered no details on what the actual story of the Cobra series might be. If the project did move ahead, it would be hard to imagine he wouldn't make some kind of appearance. If the show ends up being called Cobra, it would be odd for the title character not to appear at all.

The Current Status Of The Cobra TV Series Is Unknown

Unfortunately, Sylvester Stallone has offered no updates on the potential Cobra series since 2019. It's worth noting this could just mean it's still in development, and the pandemic may have delayed its progress. Stallone appears eager to explore TV too, having unveiled a concept for a Rocky prequel TV series, and producing a star vehicle for Dolph Lundgren dubbed The International.

For now, it looks like Cobra is either in development hell or the idea has been quietly dropped. Either way, Stallone has plenty of other projects on the horizon, including The Expendables 4.
