Netflix has renewed Cobra Kai for season 6, and there have been a lot of exciting updates. The Karate Kid continuation series has been a global hit for the streamer, who purchased Cobra Kai from YouTube Red in 2020. Cobra Kai season 5 picked up where season 4's finale left off: Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith) cheated to win the All Valley Under 18 Karate Tournament, which forced Daniel and Johnny to close their dojos. Season 5 followed the consequences of those closures or lack thereof, and what Tory Nichols (Peyton List) chooses to do with the knowledge that her win was paid for by Silver.

Cobra Kai season 5 further expanded the "Miyagiverse" by revealing new details about Cobra Kai's origin and introducing the first female Cobra Kai sensei, Kim Da-Eun (Alicia Hannah-Kim). Cobra Kai season 5 also boasted the return of Mike Barnes (Sean Kanan) from The Karate Kid Part III. By the end of Cobra Kai season 5, the paradigm of the series has drastically changed, with the martial arts studio going global and former enemies presenting a united front. Cobra Kai season 6 news teases an even bigger story than season 5, and updates suggest an even bigger Karate Kid universe is on the horizon.

Cobra Kai Season 6 Will Connect To The "Miyagiverse"

Though post-strike updates have been somewhat slow, the latest news sees Cobra Kai season 6's connection to the "Miyagiverse" explained by one of the show's creators. In a post made on X (formerly Twitter) Cobra Kai co-creator Jon Hurwitz teased season 6's connection to a rapidly expanding cinematic and TV universe. "Season 6 expands the Karate Kid/Cobra Kai universe more than the first 5 seasons combined. The world building has been truly exhilarating," wrote Hurwitz.

Though details are unknown at this time, the Karate Kid universe isn't ending with Cobra Kai's sixth and final season and will continue in the new Karate Kid movie starring Ben Wang. It's important to note that the upcoming Karate Kid movie is not a reboot, but will instead encompass all corners of the "Miyagiverse" from the original films, Cobra Kai, and even the 2010 film starring Jackie Chan. Perhaps season 6 of Cobra Kai will lay the groundwork for the story of the new film and offer insight into how it all ties together.

Ralph Macchio is slated to appear in the new Karate Kid movie as Daniel LaRusso alongside Jackie Chan as Mr. Han.

Not only did the showrunners confirm that Netflix ordered a sixth season of the series, but they also confirmed that the sixth season would be the final one for the show.

Because of the delays caused by the Hollywood strikes, production on Cobra Kai season 6 was stalled for months. Though the series has gotten back underway in earnest, nothing concrete has been provided by way of a release date. Instead, show co-creator Hayden Schlossberg has revealed that the sixth and final season will premiere at some point in 2024. While this suggests that things are moving smoothly, the final season will probably not arrive until the latter half of 2024.

Who Returns For The Final Season?

There has been no Cobra Kai season 6 news concerning cast departures, so as long as scheduling allows, most, if not all, of the main cast of season 5 should return for the sixth season. The series feels impossible without William Zabka as Johnny Lawrence and Ralph Macchio as Daniel LaRusso. It’s also likely that Martin Kove will be back since his character, John Kreese, escaped prison last season. It was also announced that an original Karate Kid character will be joining Cobra Kai season 6, with C.S. Lee playing Master Kim Sun-Yung.

Though rumors have swirled that Hilary Swank, the star of 1994's The Next Karate Kid, would return to reprise her role as Julie, Swank has denied involvement in Cobra Kai season 6. Disappointing long-time fans of the franchise, when asked if she would appear in the final season, Swank said "I don't think I am, unfortunately."

Devon trains with Tory in Cobra Kai season 5

Cobra Kai season 5 ends in a game-changing scenario for the series as not only is the fight against Terry Silver is resolved, but many other ongoing threads are settled. Cobra Kai wants to have gyms all over the world, which makes the fight against their aggressive training much bigger than the All-Valley Tournament. Fans are still waiting for Johnny and Daniel to take down Kreese, once and for all, as well as for the conflicts between some of the different pairings, like Anthony LaRusso (Santopietro) and Kenny (Young) to be settled.

There was also a Cobra Kai season 6 table read released during the Netflix Tudum presentation, and in that read, one aspect of the story was revealed. Gianni DeCenzo, who plays Demetri Alexopoulos, read one of his lines and said, “Victorious dojos are immortalized and for individual competitors, the sky’s the limit…But before we throw our hats into the mat, there’s one thing we need to do: decide our dojo name.” With that in mind, the final season of Cobra Kai might end that controversial dojo, and a new one looks to rise from the ashes.

Co-creator Jon Hurwitz recently mentioned that the world-building of season 6 outshines the world-building of the previous five seasons, suggesting something big is on the way. With the highly-anticipated Karate Kid movie starring Ben Wang on the horizon, Cobra Kai season 6 may find a way to tie things together and explain how Daniel LaRusso and Jackie Chan's Mr. Han connect.

    Summary:
Cobra Kai is a continuation of the famous Karate Kid franchise, with Ralph Macchio and William Zabka reprising their roles from the movie several years later. Set thirty years after the All Valley Karate Tournament in 1984, the series focuses on Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) reopening the Cobra Kai dojo. When down-on-his-luck Johnny Lawrence loses his job as a handyman in Los Angeles, he discovers his neighbor, Miguel Diaz(Xolo Mariduena), being bullied. When Miguel begs to be trained by Johnny, he reluctantly accepts, setting up the revival of the Cobra Kai Dojo, the soon-to-be home of many more outcasts that all unite under the dojo. Unfortunately, this revival reignites the rivalry between Daniel and Johnny, leading to the series' secondary conflict. The project was first announced in August 2017 after YouTube gave Cobra Kai a series order. Cobra Kai was eventually moved to Netflix from season 3 onwards. Season 5 premiered on September 9 2022 and focuses on Daniel and Johnny teaming up together to bring down the recently usurped Cobra Kai after Silver cheats to win at the All-Valley Karate Tournament in 2019.
