Cobra Kai season 4's story is completely planned according to the showrunners, and spinoffs are still possible. The Karate Kid franchise returned in a big way thanks to Cobra Kai. After two seasons debuted on YouTube Premium and found a specific audience, Netflix acquired the series. The first two seasons arrived on the world's biggest streaming service during 2020, and it didn't take long for Cobra Kai to become more popular. The show's new fanbase helped make the launch of season 3 a huge hit for Netflix.
Now that Cobra Kai season 3 is out and fans have binged the newest batch of episodes, all eyes are on the future. The end of Cobra Kai season 3 saw the dojo war escalate to new heights, with Miyagi-Do and Eagle Fang teaming up to fight Cobra Kai in the LaRusso house, while Johnny Lawrence and Daniel LaRusso each took turns fighting John Kreese. The good news for fans is that Netflix already ordered Cobra Kai season 4. And even though it is not confirmed when the next season will arrive, the creators have the story all planned out - and have hopes for a bigger future.
During a recent interview with TVLine, co-showrunners Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg were asked about what comes next for Cobra Kai. In regards to the status of season 4, Heald said, "We have most of the episodes written, and have the whole season figured out." But they also talked about their desire to do spinoffs. None have been announced so far, but Schlossberg says that they are definitely possible.
"If you look at our careers, we’ve always had sequels. We fall in love with our characters. Every permutation of spinoff or deep-dive crosses our minds. It all has to be the right thing, and it has to be the same level of quality that Cobra Kai is. Our minds are always thinking Karate Kid, so that possibility is definitely out there."
Since Netflix announced plans to bring Cobra Kai back for season 4 in October 2020, it shouldn't be too surprising to hear they know the whole story. With most of the scripts written already, they should be nearing the point of having all the story beats worked out. They've also said in the past that they know where Cobra Kai's story will end. While that won't happen with season 4, the fact that they already know the ending shows just how much of the show's future they already have planned.
As for the idea of doing Cobra Kai spinoffs, this is something that the showrunners have expressed a desire to do in the past. They've said that they have ideas for at least five different Cobra Kai spinoffs. However, that was before the show actually moved to Netflix. Now that the launch of season 3 has been so successful and mostly well-received, it won't be too surprising if Netflix begins serious discussions about what types of Cobra Kai spinoffs the showrunners are interested in.
