Cobra Kai season 3 doesn't include an on-camera appearance by Raymond aka "Stingray," so what happened to John Kreese's eldest student? Portrayed by Paul Walter Hauser, the character initially forms a business relationship with Johnny Lawerence in the Cobra Kai season 2 premiere and later participates in the season-ending school brawl. In third series installment, the episode "Aftermath" provides brief clues about Raymond's whereabouts.
Raymond provides comic relief during Cobra Kai season 2. While selling a mirror to Johnny, he's impressed by the customer's Metallica t-shirt and awkwardly implies that he would like to develop a friendship. So, when Raymond shows up the Cobra Kai dojo wearing a neckbeard braid, it becomes evident that he wants Johnny to help him establish a new identity. Soon after, the "Stingray" moniker is introduced, which suggests that the bearded character is ready to leave his old life behind.
Stingray's absence in Cobra Kai season 3 is foreshadowed during the season 2 finale, "No Mercy." Not only does the episode raise major red flags about character's frame of mind, but also shows him engaging in violence with children. First, Raymond tried to land a security guard position at West Valley High School, which implies that he wants to be closer to his new Cobra Kai friends, a sign of his loneliness. But during an interview with Principal Lopez (Jose Miguel Vasquez), Raymond actually identifies himself as Stingray and doesn't give the impression that he's fit to be employed by the school. When the school brawl begins, Stingray tries to help the Principal but ends up attacking several teenage students, which further underlines his lack of self-awareness. During the Cobra Kai season 3 premiere, Principal Lopez speaks at a PTA meeting, and tells a concerned parent that "Mr. Stingray" never worked at the school. He also suggests the Raymond has some pending legal issues ("probation") and that he's not allowed to be within 500 feet of any child.
Cobra Kai season 3 doesn't offer any more details about Stingray's whereabouts, but the aforementioned PTA meeting implies that he ended up in court because of the school brawl. As a character, Stingray is somewhat similar to Hauser's titular character in Richard Jewell: a real-life security guard who discovered explosives at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, only to be falsely accused as terrorist. In Cobra Kai, Stingray's behavior suggests that he could be a stalker, as he first tracks down Johnny and then wants to be near the Cobra Kids at their school. In reality, though, Stingray may be lacking friends in his personal life, which explains why he joins Johnny's dojo.
After committing acts of violence again children, it's highly unlikely that Stingray will end up training with Johnny or Daniel LaRusso in Cobra Kai season 4. However, the character could return in a reduced role, perhaps in redemption story subplot. But given that Hauser will appear in several feature films throughout 2021, and undoubtedly has more in the works, he may just choose to leave Stingray in the past for now. By Cobra Kai season 5, perhaps enough time will have passed to justify the character's return.
