After its Emmy nominations earlier for this year, Cobra Kai is once again in the running for accolades as it nabs three 2021 People's Choice Awards nominations. Cobra Kai is a Netflix original series that premiered May 2, 2018, and is a spin-off of the Karate Kid franchise. The series follows Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) 30 years after the events of the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament, as their feud continues and spills over into the next generation.

Cobra Kai season 4 is set to debut on December 31, 2021, and will see the return of Karate Kid 3 villain Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith). The stakes are higher than ever in the upcoming season, as LaRusso and Lawrence form an alliance against Silver and John Kreese (Martin Kove). Both teams are forming their own karate dojos and there will be quite a bit of tension as partners struggle to see eye-to-eye and as allies try to win over students to their specific dojo. Cobra Kai has received high praise thus far, for both its comedy and drama, and for effectively paying homage to the Karate Kid.

As reported by Heavy, Cobra Kai has been nominated for three 2021 People's Choice Awards. The series was nominated in the categories of The Show of 2021, The Drama Show of 2021, and The Bingeworthy Show of 2021. Cobra Kai will face some stiff competition in The Show of 2021 as it is up against such strong as contenders as Loki, WandaVision, SNL, and This Is Us. Similarly, for The Bingeworthy Show of 2021, Cobra Kai was nominated alongside the likes of Ted Lasso, Loki, and Squid Game. In The Drama Show of 2021, Cobra Kai will compete with The Walking Dead, Greys Anatomy, Outer Banks, The Equalizer, 9-1-1, This Is Us, and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.

If the series does nab a People's Choice Award, it will be right before Cobra Kai season 4 hits Netflix and, thus, might give it an extra boost of credibility and visibility. While Cobra Kai does face some steep competition, it has its own factors that give it an edge. For starters, the series boasts Emmy nominations - something that is lacking from several of the People's Choice nominees that Cobra Kai is competing against. Meanwhile, selection for People's Choice Awards rests in the hands of the public as they cast their votes for the winner. Cobra Kai boasts a a very dedicated fanbase that dates back to the 1980s when the Karate Kid first premiered, giving its fanbase strong voting power.

Cobra Kai's People's Choice Awards nominations illustrate the strong positive reception that the series has received over the course of its three seasons. The series is nostalgic for the older fans of Karate Kid and the timeless Johnny and Daniel rivalry, and also appeals to the newer generation with its effective use of comedy and teenage drama. It is exceedingly difficult for a sequel or spin-off to garner the success that the original show/movie gained, but Cobra Kai defied all odds as it went on to gain critical acclaim. While Cobra Kai's nominations are definitely well earned and deserved, the public will have the final say in whether the series will come out a winner or not in the 2021 People's Choice Awards.
