YouTube released a trailer for Cobra Kai season 2. Based on the original Karate Kid film franchise, the dramedy web series stars Ralph Macchio and William Zabka, both of whom reprise their original roles. Last May, YouTube officially ordered Cobra Kai season 2 and released a teaser video in March 2019. 

Co-created by Hayden Schlossberg, Jon Hurwitz, and Josh Heald, Cobra Kai season 1 picks up 34 years after the narrative events of 1984’s The Karate Kid. In John G. Avildsen’s film, Macchio portrays Daniel LaRusso, a teenager martial arts enthusiast who moves from New Jersey to California. There, he’s mentored by a fictional karate master named Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita). Elisabeth Shue stars as Daniel’s love interest, Ali Mills, while the film’s villains are Zabka’s Johnny Lawrence and Martin Kove’s John Kreese - the latter of whom runs the Cobra Kai dojo. Produced for $8 million, The Karate Kid earned $91 million at the box office, Morita received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor, and the original film spawned three sequels, along with a 2010 remake starring Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith. For Cobra Kai, Will Smith is one of the executive producers.

On YouTube, the Cobra Kai account released the season 2 trailer. From the jump, Johnny Lawrence states that “Cobra Kai is back where it belongs,” which sets the tone for the introduction of Kove’s John Kreese, the aforementioned character who appears in the first three franchise films. Before Macchio’s protagonist figure even appears in the Cobra Kai season 2 trailer, Lawrence and Kreese work out their unresolved tension with a proper battle. LaRusso then makes his way into the narrative; a character who’s portrayed as a family man, and at peace with his place in the universe. “Balance is my thing,” the Karate Kid says, which kicks off the primary action for Cobra Kai season 2’s trailer and sets the tone for the creation of Miyagi-Do. As a whole, the Cobra Kai clip touches on the past, introduces prominent female characters, and concludes with a nostalgic face-off between Lawrence and LaRusso. In Cobra Kai’s season 2 trailer, Mary Mouser portrays LaRusso’s daughter, Samantha. Although the 22-year-old American actress has an extensive film and television resume dating back to 2004, she’s mostly known for starring in The CW’s short-lived 2008 series Life Is Wild, along with ABC media drama Body of Proof, which aired for three seasons from 2011 to 2013. In the Cobra Kai season 2 trailer, Mouser is featured alongside American actress Peyton List (Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days).

Believe it or not, Cobra Kai currently has a 100 percent Rotten Tomatoes score, a testament to its balance of nostalgia and timely storytelling. Given that the original cast members are mostly known for their involvement with The Karate Kid franchise, there’s an organic feel to the premise and introduction of new characters. Most importantly, audiences seem to fundamentally enjoy Cobra Kai.
