Warning: SPOILERS for Cobra Kai season 3.

In Cobra Kai season 3's premiere, Miguel Diaz finally woke from his coma and it's fitting that his sensei, Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka), was the one who got through to him. Miguel was hospitalized at the end of Cobra Kai season 2 after Johnny's son, Robby Keene (Tanner Buchanan), kicked him off of a second-floor stairwell. Miguel has a severe spinal injury and he was in a coma for two weeks - but he finally awoke thanks to Johnny.

Johnny and Miguel are the heart of Cobra Kai and they're essentially an even more unlikely modern-day spin on the relationship between Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) and Mr. Miyagi (Noriyuki "Pat" Morita) in The Karate Kid movie trilogy. Miguel was Johnny's nerdy neighbor who Lawrence took on as the first student of his resurrected Cobra Kai dojo. Miguel idolized his brash and badass Sensei Lawrence, who was still lost in the 1980s, and wished Diaz wasn't such a nerd. But they put their faith in each other and Miguel's karate skills grew along with his confidence. Under Johnny's guidance, Miguel won the All Valley Under 18 Karate Championship and, together, they built Cobra Kai into a success. Johnny opened up to Miguel and treated him like his son; in return, Miguel showed Johnny the affection he can't get from Robby, his estranged biological son. Miguel's loyalty to Johnny superseded everything, even John Kreese's (Martin Kove) successful takeover of the Cobra Kai dojo.

When Cobra Kai season 3 kicks off, Johnny is heartbroken from losing his dojo but, mainly, he drinks himself into a stupor and gets into fights out of his anguish over Miguel being in a coma. Meanwhile, Diaz dreams of the All Valley Karate Tournament, which he dominated in real life but, in his fantasy, he's demoralized and on the verge of defeat. Although his mother, Carmen (Vanessa Rubio), and his grandmother Rosa (Rose Bianco), are at his bedside and lending him support, Miguel needs his sensei, who didn't come to see him in the hospital because Lawrence was on a two-week bender and spending time in jail. But when Johnny did come to the hospital he was blocked from seeing Miguel because he isn't part of the Diaz family. Johnny even resorted to hilarious means like disguising himself as a doctor to infiltrate the hospital.

When Johnny finally did make it to Miguel's hospital room, the banged-up ex-Cobra Kai sensei gave his first student one of his typical abrasive pep talks. But deep down, Miguel loves the gruff way Sensei Lawrence motivates him, and it was Johnny's voice he wanted to hear all along. After all, before the West Valley High brawl erupted, Miguel left Johnny a voice mail asking his advice (like he always did) and even hoping they could get burgers at Johnny's favorite burger joint. Although Miguel loves his mom and his ya-ya, Sensei Lawrence is the prime motivating force in Miguel's life and made Diaz into a champion. Miguel literally needed Johnny to order him to wake up - which Miguel ultimately did at the end of Cobra Kai season 3, episode 1, "Aftermath".

But there's another reason why Miguel needed Johnny: Sensei Lawrence is partly the reason why Diaz is in the hospital bed, to begin with. It was Miguel who took Johnny's revised Cobra Kai lessons most to heart; while Hawk (Jacob Bertrand), Tory Nichols (Peyton List), and the rest of the Cobra Kai were buying into Kreese's brutal "no mercy" philosophy - and becoming bullies in the process - Miguel believed Johnny when he taught him that it was important to show mercy after all. Yet, when Miguel showed Robby mercy at West Valley High, Johnny's son kicked him off the balcony and he paid the price. In Cobra Kai season 3, Miguel not only needs to have Johnny back on his side, he also has to know why listening to Sensei Lawrence put him in the hospital. And the only way for Miguel to get the answers he needs is to wake up and ask Johnny man-to-man.
