Cobra Kai writer Jon Hurwitz says they don't know how many seasons it will take to tell the full Cobra Kai story. Cobra Kai is the Netflix-produced series that continues The Karate Kid film series, which originally starred Ralph Macchio and William Zabka. Picking up about 35 years after the events of the first film, Cobra Kai follows Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence, two karate rivals who reignite their rivalry, while helping to train the next generation of students.

Originally created as a YouTube Red series, Cobra Kai was eventually picked up by Netflix where it was renewed through season 5, which is currently filming. The show quickly became a top-rated series for the streamer, with the third season picking up a number of Emmy nominations, including for Outstanding Comedy Series. With billions of views already logged on Netflix and the overall interest the show has gained since it began, Cobra Kai has quickly become one of the most important shows for the streaming service.

During a Q&A with Jon Hurwitz on Twitter, the writer/showrunner of Cobra Kai said that he isn't sure how many seasons it will take to get to the end of the series, but they do know where they're going. The storylines that have been set up thus far continue to expand and evolve, with multiple twists and turns that keep the show vibrant, interesting, and unpredictable. Josh Heald, another one of the writers/showrunners on the show, has said in the past that they have an ending in mind for Cobra Kai that goes well beyond season 4, but are continuing at the pace they always have for the show, regardless of whether or not they get there. Check out Hurwitz's Tweet below:

Hurwitz and Heald, as well as Hayden Schlossberg, are perhaps best known for their work on the Harold and Kumar franchise but have quickly become well-known for their work on Cobra Kai. The creators have discussed multiple avenues for Cobra Kai to continue, especially with spinoffs that could explore characters past and present. Hurwitz and Schlossberg also teamed up to write and direct American Reunion back in 2012, and are currently preparing a fifth sequel to the American Pie series.

As with any show, audiences can get antsy as it continues, especially if certain storylines aren't paid off in due time. While the drama needs to continue in order to keep any show going, the payoff needs to be worth the investment. Thus far, Hurwitz and co. have continued to exceed expectations with each new season of Cobra Kai, with season 4 expected to do the same. At a minimum,  having a plan for where the show will ultimately lead is always a good indicator that the investment will be worth it and that the show won't overstay its welcome or leave viewers in eternal suspense. Cobra Kai is one of the few shows currently running that plays far better than anyone could have hoped for, providing an expansive narrative that could potentially last for another decade.
