The creators of Cobra Kai have ideas for at least five more Karate Kid spinoff shows. The Karate Kid franchise began in 1984 and received a trilogy of films starring Ralph Macchio as Daniel LaRusso and Pat Morita as Mr. Miyagi. Morita then returned for a fourth film starring Hilary Swank and the franchise was later rebooted in 2010 with Jackie Chan. But, the original Karate Kid franchise has now returned thanks to the Cobra Kai TV show.

Cobra Kai originally launched on YouTube as one of the platform's original pieces of content. Macchio returned to the star in the series, as did William Zabka as Johnny Lawrence. The first two seasons of Cobra Kai have been praised for how it reinvented the franchise. Not only has the show brought back several characters from the original movies, but it has also introduced a whole new cast of young karate enthusiasts. With a third season set for a 2021 debut on Netflix, there is no definitive end in sight for Cobra Kai - and the show's creators have ideas to do a lot more.

Now that seasons 1 and 2 of Cobra Kai are streaming on Netflix, Slashfilm had the chance to talk to creators Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald. They discussed a variety of topics pertaining to Cobra Kai's past and future during the interview and were specifically asked about the possibility of doing more Karate Kid spinoffs on Netflix. According to Hurwitz, they've got at least five ideas to do just that.

We have put thought into spin-off ideas. We love just The Karate Kid universe, love all the characters from back in the day and we love the characters we’ve created. It’s hard for me to give you an exact answer to this, but what I can say is that we have a list of at least five different scenarios that we would pursue, that we could consider. Now, some of them are untraditional. Some of them are unlike any kind of spin-off you’ve ever seen before. But, every time we’re writing episodes of the show, we’re falling in love with the characters that we’re creating and examining characters from the past. Within the world of Cobra Kai, there are certain things that you can explore and certain things that don’t fit into that particular box, but there may be opportunities down the road to break out one of these characters and get to know them better or to explore different times in characters’ lives or what have you.

Since plans for more Karate Kid spinoffs haven't been announced, the creators being so secretive about their ideas makes sense. But, there are clearly several possible stories to tell thanks to the longevity of the franchise. Without knowing which ones they could pursue, Hurwitz's tease that some of them are unconventional is quite intriguing. That would seemingly rule out standard spinoff practices like origin stories or ones focused on supporting characters. In terms of those that are more straight forward, perhaps they are considering spinoffs like one set in Okinawa or a young Miyagi series.

Even though the Cobra Kai creators have several ideas for more spinoffs, it is still too early to tell whether or not any of them will be made. If Netflix is the key to making more Karate Kid spinoffs, then Cobra Kai will need to be a big hit for the streamer to consider spinoffs. Netflix did recently announce a prequel/spinoff for The Witcher, so there is some precedence to the idea of one of their shows becoming part of a bigger franchise. As Cobra Kai is only just now being exposed to Netflix's huge subscriber base, those hoping to see more from this universe will need the show to perform incredibly well.
