Clueless is the 1990s retelling of Jane Austen's Emma. It's also a cinematic classic that is filled with teenage drama and hilarious one-liners that'll have fans "totally buggin'." Everything about Amy Heckerling's epic film still holds up after over two decades since its release, and it is still highly regarded as one of the best "chick flicks" of all time. It's right up there with Mean Girls and Heathers, making it an instant classic.

Somehow, Clueless gets better and better with age, like a fine wine. So to honor the movie that blessed audiences with an abundance of '90s slang terms, here's a look back at the best quotes from the film.

Updated on September 9th, 2022 by Amanda Bruce: There are plenty of millennials who can likely quote Clueless backwards and forwards. It’s a formative movie for a generation that grew up in the golden age of teen rom-coms. Of course, just because a movie can be quoted from top to bottom, doesn’t mean it should be. The best lines truly exemplify the movie’s great writing, and fans can now relive it thanks to it being added to Netflix’s streaming catalog.

"SHE'S A FULL-ON MONET."

Cher, About Amber

Cher walks between Tai and Dionne in a red dress at school in Clueless

Cher has a lot of slang terms in the movie that would likely have even been considered old-fashioned at the time, like calling attractive women “Bettys” and attractive men “Baldwins.” One of her most creative terms, however, is for her frenemy Amber, whom, when Tai is impressed by her, Cher explains is a “Monet.”

This is a reference to the paintings of Monet, an impressionist. His work created some of the most beautiful water lilies on canvas from far away, but when an admirer gets too close to the canvas, the paint appears messy and without a pattern. While Amber might appear to be one of the popular put-together girls, Cher knows her as someone else entirely.

"I WAS SURFING THE CRIMSON WAVE."

Cher, Disputing A Tardy With Mr. Hall

Cher, in a beret, at her desk in Clueless

When Mr. Hall announces tardies and absences to the class, Cher offers an objection to hers. She explains to him that on the date in question, she had to run to the ladies’ room before class, and he ends up excusing her.

One of the reasons this particular Clueless line holds up so well is because it’s extremely unusual for menstruation to be referenced in teen or kids’ movies unless it’s as the butt of a joke by a male character. Cher’s matter-of-fact and completely unashamed explanation for her tardiness could have ushered in a more frank discussion concerning women in teen movies, but the line didn’t go anywhere beyond giving young women in the audience a clever euphemism to use.

"UGH, AS IF!"

Cher's Response To The Interest Of High School Boys

"As if!" is one of the most iconic movie quotes of all time. It is a phrase that is so '90s it hurts, and perhaps that's why fans love it so much. The vintage flair gives it a nice touch so if someone is feeling nostalgic towards the decade of crop tops, choker necklaces, and boy bands, they can use this phrase to indicate "in your dreams, buddy!"

It's the perfect thing to say whenever a stranger at the bar gets a little too friendly. Any time a person gives someone else unwanted attention, they can bring out their inner Cher Horowitz and say "Ugh, As if!"

"OH MY GOD, I AM TOTALLY BUGGIN'!"

Cher, Realizing Murray is Right

Cher is confused and Dionne is impressed in Clueless

Another epic '90s quote. In 2019 translation, "I'm totally buggin'" means "I'm freaking out." So any time a person get overly stressed over their workload or romantic life, they just call up their best friend and tell them with complete seriousness that they're "totally buggin.'"

Cher uses this phrase when she realizes that Murray is more perceptive about Christian's lack of romantic interest in her than she is, and it's a phrase that should be shared on t-shirts, Instagram captions, and car decals for years to come.

"YOU'RE A VIRGIN WHO CAN'T DRIVE."

Tai Does Her Best To Insult Cher

Tai insults Cher in Clueless

Another classic Clueless quote said by the glorious Brittany Murphy (may she rest in peace). Tai says this to Cher after the two get into a heated argument over Paul Rudd's character, Josh.

Later on in the film the two thankfully make amends, but Tai's insult that was uttered all the way back in the '90s still somehow burns. Amy Heckerling, writer and director of Clueless, created this line for Murphy's character because it was personal to her own high school experience where she was a "virgin" who "couldn't drive." Plus, Murphy stated in an interview that at the time of filming, she was also a virgin who couldn't drive. Who knew!

"SHE'S MY FRIEND BECAUSE WE BOTH KNOW WHAT IT'S LIKE FOR PEOPLE TO BE JEALOUS OF US."

Cher, On What She And Dionne Have In Common

Dionne and Cher are best friend goals. Not only are they the most fashionable queens in all of Beverly Hills, but they're also caring individuals who bond over acts of kindness. They set their lonely teachers up together.

They give Tai a killer makeover. They are both named after famous singers from the past who now do infomercials. What more could someone possibly ask for in a friendship?

"A TOTAL BETTY."

Cher, Describing Her Mom

Betty Grable in black and white

Cher says, "Wasn't my mom a total betty? She died when I was young - a freak accident during a routine liposuction."

A "total betty" is another phrase that fans desperately want to have printed on a t-shirt, so they can wear it 24/7. The slang "betty" means "hottie" in modern speak, and Cher uses it whenever she thinks a woman is looking absolutely gorgeous. The phrase is actually a reference to classic Hollywood icons like actress Betty Grable.

"ROLLIN' WITH THE HOMIES..."

Tai, Singing With Elton

Tai smiling in Clueless

Tai gets a minor concussion at a party and Elton helps the poor girl out by asking her if she can sing the words to the Coolio song while doing a swerving wave hand motion. Turns out, she can. Later on, when Tai ends up getting rejected by Elton, she cries as the song comes on at a restaurant because it instantly reminds her of her old "love."

Now nobody can possibly listen to that tune without instantly being reminded of Clueless.

"OKAY, OKAY, SO HE'S KIND OF A BALDWIN."

Cher, On Josh

Cher leans over Josh's shoulder while he reads in Clueless

Cher says this line when she's contemplating her feelings for Josh. In modern speak, the slang term is meant to indicate a person who is as attractive as one of the Baldwin brothers. (Back in 1995, the Baldwins were total hunks.)

It wouldn't take most audience memberw the entire length of the movie to realize that Paul Rudd is "kind of a Baldwin," but in Cher's defense, she is naturally clueless. When she finally realizes Josh is the one, and they share a passionate kiss, it's all just way too adorable to handle.

"DO YOU PREFER FASHION VICTIM OR ENSEMBLY CHALLENGED?"

Cher And Dionne Judge Tai's Style

Alicia Silverstone and Brittany Murphy in a doorway in Clueless

Cher and Dionne are the ultimate fashion police, and they believe the way you dress speaks volumes about your personality. People might not always agree with them, but they are experts at giving makeovers.

When they give new girl Tai a makeover, they make her go from "emsembly challenged" to a "total betty." Even before the makeover, Tai has her own sense of style; it just doesn't happen to mesh with Dionne and Cher, but she finds her own happy medium throughout the movie, showcasing her new style and her personality through her clothes.

"DO YOU LIKE BILLIE HOLIDAY?" "I LOVE HIM."

Cher Doesn't Actually Know Who Christian Is Talking About

Christian leans in to talk to Cher while she chews on a pencil in Clueless

When Christian asks, "Do you like Billie Holiday?" Cher says, "I love him!" This is another hilarious example of Cher being "clueless." Clearly, she has absolutely no idea who Billie Holiday is because she mistakes the famous singer for being a man when Holiday is most certainly a woman. Obviously, Cher will do anything to impress Christian. Why? Because he actually knows how to dress.

It takes a lot for Cher to be impressed by a high school boy, because according to Cher, "searching for a boy in high school is like searching for meaning in a Pauly Shore movie". If she can find someone who impresses her, she'll do anything to win their affection - including pretending to love Billie Holiday even though she's never heard of her.

"IT DOES NOT SAY R.S.V.P ON THE STATUE OF LIBERTY!"

Cher Makes An Impassioned Debate Speech

Cher at her computer in Clueless

This is one of the least dated of Cher's most notable quotes, and it is more relevant than ever. Cher says this surprisingly insightful line while in debate class as she presents her stance to the class against Amber. The rest of the class doesn't entirely understand her speech about welcoming immigrants to the United States, but Cher's points make perfect sense, and it remains one of the most iconic Clueless scenes.

Cher Horowitz may be clueless for the most part, but sometimes she'll say something akin to the quote above, and she'll suddenly become the voice of a generation.
