Clueless has become the latest cult comedy movie to get the Honest Trailers treatment. Loosely based on Jane Austen’s novel, Emma, the teen rom-com is one of the defining movies of the mid-90s. Clueless centers around Beverley Hills socialite, Cher Horowitz (Alicia Silverstone), who is defined by her iconic fashion sense. She decides to take “tragically unhip” new girl, Tai (Brittney Murphy), under her wing - but when Tai’s newfound popularity strains their close friendship, Cher is forced to reassess her priorities. Clueless remains one of the most beloved teen comedies of all time, and fans were recently disappointed when news broke that the planned reboot TV series would not be moving forward at Peacock.

Now, Screen Junkies have softened the blow with their latest Honest Trailer, which pokes fun at Clueless as a paradigm of '90s teen culture “as seen through the eyes of a much older screenwriter.” The trailer briefly mourns the loss of the mid-budget studio comedy before diving in to playfully ridicule everything from Cher’s “$10 vocabulary” to the undeniable awkwardness of her relationship with her ex-stepbrother and college kid, Josh (Paul Rudd). One highlight of the Honest Trailer is a creative mash-up of Cher’s most iconic catchphrase and Marvel’s latest TV show to create “Marvel’s As If” - a fun way to pay tribute to the Clueless reboot that could have been. As the Screen Junkies team points out, Clueless is a little light on character development or complex plots. But ultimately, they recognize that it’s also a beloved coming-of-age comedy that paved the way for other teen classics like 10 Things I Hate About You and She’s All That. It may be heavy on the high school tropes and '90s teen slang, but despite getting an Honest Trailers takedown, Clueless remains a classic.
