The Cloverfield Paradox will be getting a Blu-ray and home video release in February 2019. The third film in the Cloverfield franchise centers around a group of astronauts who venture into space to solve the world's energy crisis, only to cause the entire Earth to disappear, and end up in an alternate reality. The third entry of the Cloverfield series had been highly anticipated ever since it was revealed that God Particle had evolved into Cloverfield 3, but upon its release, fans were less than happy with the end result.
While the first Cloverfield has received a cult following over the years, and the second film, 10 Cloverfield Lane, was praised for the exquisite performances, the third film fell below many people's expectations. Not only was Cloverfield 3 delayed several times, but the third film received a surprise release on Netflix directly after Super Bowl LLI. While fans were no doubt excited that they would be able to view the next Cloverfield film months earlier than expected, it made some worry that Paramount was just dumping Cloverfield 3 on Netflix because they weren't confident with the film. Despite The Cloverfield Paradox receiving brutal reviews, Paramount will be distributing the film for a home video release next year.
First reported by Cinelinx, The Cloverfield Paradox will be coming to Blu-ray and DVD on Feb. 5, 2019. Both the DVD and Blu-ray will include over 25 minutes of bonus material, including interviews from the cast and crew, and a documentary about the film called Things Are Not as They Appear: The Making of The Cloverfield Paradox. While there isn't any word just yet about a digital or 4k release, the film is also expected to be released as part of a Cloverfield triple pack, which includes Cloverfield, 10 Cloverfield Lane, and The Cloverfield Paradox.
Giving The Cloverfield Paradox a home video release is significant for a few reasons. First of all, it is quite rare for a Netflix exclusive to get a home video release. Stranger Things seasons 1 and 2 have gotten a Blu-ray release with VHS packaging, but other than that, there have not been very many Netflix exclusive movies or TV shows that have gotten a home release. Giving The Cloverfield Paradox a Blu-ray and DVD release could also hint at the possibility of upcoming news about that "true" Cloverfield sequel that is supposedly hitting theaters soon.
While giving a Netflix film a home video release is fairly uncommon, it will be interesting to see if people actually buy The Cloverfield Paradox, since it is still available to stream for free with a Netflix membership. Reviews for the film indicate that not very many would be interesting in owning the film, let alone paying for it. That being said, Cloverfield does have a die-hard fan base, many of which will be thrilled to get the entire trilogy lined up on their shelves.
The Cloverfield Paradox will be available on DVD and Blu-ray on February 5, 2019.
