The viral marketing campaign for Cloverfield 3 officially begins with the launch of a cryptic website. With franchises and IPs being king of Hollywood in recent years, marketing strategies have also changed. Most films get year long promotional campaigns at this point, but one franchise that has made a habit of short, surprising marketing blitzes is Cloverfield. The success of the first film in 2008 spawned a surprise continuation two years ago with 10 Cloverfield Lane. With plans for a bigger universe, anticipation has run high for what comes next.

Previously known as God Particle, the third Cloverfield film has been just as secretive as the installments that came before. It boasts an impressive cast of David Oyelowo, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Daniel Bruhl, Elizabeth Debicki, and more. The film was recently delayed to April, giving marketing just a bit longer to begin - or wait. Now, it looks like Cloverfield 3's marketing is finally kicking in.

Bloody Disgusting uncovered a new viral website that signifies the start of Cloverfield 3's marketing. Using the universe's Tagruato company as the foundation, the website doesn't reveal much on the surface. Reddit decoded the secret message the site holds, but even that isn't too revealing:

Tokyo – January 18, 2018: Tagruato has begun development on a revolutionary new energy technology in what Ceo Garo Yoshida called a technological great leap forward for our planet. This renewable technology will take at least 4 years to complete along with another six years International regulatory bodies to bring the powerful revolutionary energy source by April 18, 2028.

It isn't surprising that Cloverfield 3's marketing is cryptic to start. This universe is always shrouded in mystery, so why would the third installment be any different? It hopefully won't be too long before some proper marketing surfaces, specifically the first trailer. If the movie does intend to stick to its new release date, there isn't that much time left to make audiences around the world aware of the sequel.

Cloverfield 3's plot revolves around a group of astronauts who are aboard a space station when an experiment goes wrong, forcing them to fight for their lives. It is possible that said failed experiment is connected to this new technology that Tagruato is developing. Whatever the case may be, expect something wild to happen before the movie comes to a close. 10 Cloverfield Lane for example was devoid of any sci-fi elements up until the final 10 minutes or so, so Cloverfield 3 could take a similar late turn to connect it to the other films.

While this website doesn't reveal too much (yet, anyway), it is a signal that marketing has begun, so hopefully more concrete details on Cloverfield 3 will follow quickly.
