Star Wars: The Clone Wars teases Darth Maul's future by having Solo: A Star Wars Story's villain, Dryden Vos, cameo in season 7, episode 10. The former Sith's appearance at the end of Solo: A Star Wars Story left many viewers confused, since the character was thought to have been killed in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace. He returned in Clone Wars but vanished after his duel with Darth Sidious in season 5. He's back again in Clone Wars season 7, and episode 10, "The Phantom Apprentice", lays the foundation for Maul's involvement with crime lord Dryden Vos in the coming years.

In Clone Wars season 5, Maul was amassing a power base to exact his revenge on Obi-Wan Kenobi. For his plan to work to its fullest potential, he needed to build an army of the galaxy's most ruthless and resourceful criminals. He and his brother Savage Opress recruited with a "join us or die" mentality, enlisting the likes of the Pyke Syndicate and the Black Sun organization. They later became known as the Shadow Collective, pledging fealty to their new leader and following his strict orders. It was smooth sailing for some time; however, by the Siege of Mandalore, the cracks were starting to show.

During the Republic's assault on Mandalore, Maul consulted with the leaders of the Shadow Collective to discuss their plan of action should Mandalore fall. It was clear the faction was in disarray, but he hoped to cling to his power for as long as he possibly could. He instructs them to go into hiding for the time being, at least until the galaxy was back in order. Among the handful of crime bosses was Dryden Vos, the antagonist of 2018's Solo: A Star Wars Story. His appearance sets the stage for the Son of Dathomir's cameo at the end of Solo and his future in the Star Wars universe, by teasing his connection to Crimson Dawn much earlier than it might have been expected.

Following Vos' death after a skirmish with both Han Solo and Qi'ra in Solo: A Star Wars Story, the latter decides to take the reigns of Crimson Dawn. To assert her new position and announce her boss' demise, she consults her superior, revealed to be Darth Maul. At the time of Solo's release, there was no concrete connection between him and Crimson Dawn on-screen. This small Clone Wars moment adds a bit of context to their meeting, retroactively including the syndicate in the Shadow Collective. Furthermore, it also implies that the group is still together and in operation in some form by the time the Empire is established.

With all of Solo's struggles at the box office and behind the scenes, its story will not be continued. Though a sequel was set up, it won't be capitalized on any time soon, leaving many questions about Solo's ending. This places the answers in the hands of whatever Star Wars media chooses to tackle them. The Clone Wars' inclusion of Dryden Vos is a nice nod to the film but also gives an introduction to his dealings with the leader of the Shadow Collective. In turn, this scene lays the groundwork for Darth Maul's future.
