As is traditional in Marvel Comics-based movies and TV shows, Freeform's new series Cloak and Dagger features a cameo by Marvel legend Stan Lee - or, at least, a painting of him. The series stars Olivia Holt and Aubrey Joseph as Tandy Bowen and Tyrone Johnson, respectively: two high school teens from very different backgrounds who discover that their burgeoning superpowers are connected, and work best when they're together.

It's been a long wait for Cloak and Dagger, which was first announced by Marvel TV boss Jeph Loeb back in 2011 - before even Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. had been given the green light. Things were quiet on the Cloak and Dagger front until 2016, when ABC ordered a 10-episode first series for Freeform, and the show finally premieres tonight. The pilot, "First Light," was directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, who is also set to direct Silver and Black as part of Sony's new Spider-Man-adjacent cinematic universe.

Executive producer Joe Pokaski told TVLine where to look out for Marvel Comics' most recognizable founding father, revealing that "there’s a fantastic painting of Stan Lee that’s hidden in one of our scenes" in the first season. While Lee has physical cameos in all of the Marvel Studios films, his cameos in other movies and TV shows are often symbolic. He appeared as a poster-boy for the NYPD in Marvel's various Defenders series on Netflix, and Deadpool 2 saw him show up on the side of a building in graffiti. In Cloak and Dagger, fans will have to once again keep an eye on the walls in the background in order to spot Lee.

Cloak and Dagger is set in New Orleans, and while it will keep its distance from the movie side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there are a few connections that draw a clear line to the rest of the world. Among them is Roxxon Corp., the shady conglomerate that has made appearances in everything from the Iron Man movies to ABC's Agent Carter. "We’re excited to have Roxxon Gulf, our Louisiana version of Roxxon, represented," Pokaski teased, also saying that "there are at least a dozen Easter eggs in the first season that Marvel approved, and a few more that I snuck in there."

But will those Easter eggs turn into tangible crossovers with other Marvel properties? Well, it's very possible. While Cloak and Dagger seems to be thoroughly cut off from the events of the movies (Pokaski is "not allowed to talk about the timing in terms of Infinity War"), the showrunner did indicate that there have been discussions about crossing the Freeform series over with some of the other Marvel series. "We’ve had some exciting conversations about how we could artfully cross Tandy and Tyrone over [to other Marvel properties]," Pokaski said. "The beauty of these two is that they can show up anywhere [and it makes sense]." So, don't rule out the possibility of seeing Tandy and Tyrone show up in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 6.
