Marvel and Freeform's Cloak & Dagger season 2 is just around the corner, and here's what viewers can expect to see once it returns. Softly set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Cloak & Dagger is one of many live-action TV shows that Marvel has made recently, but it is the only one to call the ABC affiliate network Freeform its home. Cloak & Dagger focuses on two titular teenagers, Tandy Bowen (Olivia Holt) and Tyrone Johnson (Aubrey Joseph), who only just discovered that they have super powers. The first season largely focused on the two learning about their connection and powers, but it was them possibly fulfilling a "Divine Pairing" prophecy that became the centerpiece in later episodes.
As the freshman season of the series continued to deliver quality content and pull in viewers, Freeform announced that Cloak & Dagger season 2 had already been ordered. This was welcomed news by itself, but they also promised that fans of the series wouldn't have to wait too long to see what the next season would hold. When the season finale aired, it successfully wrapped up the main storyline it was telling, but also set up a villainous turn for Brigid O'Reilly (Emma Lahana) as Mayhem.
Production began on Cloak & Dagger season 2 last year, but there hasn't been too much publicity so far for what comes next. So, when can viewers catch Cloak & Dagger season 2, what will they contain, and will they be the end? Here's what to expect in Cloak & Dagger season 2 and possibly beyond.
Cloak & Dagger Season 2 Release Date
Freeform previously announced that Cloak & Dagger season 2 will premiere on April 4, 2019. This will keep Cloak & Dagger on the Thursday 8 pm time slot that it occupied for all of season 1. Freeform and Marvel are also following in the footsteps of the successful and record setting launch by opening the season with a two-episode event. Exact plot details or even titles for Cloak & Dagger season 2's first two episodes have yet to be released, but we do have a general idea of what they could contain and set up.
Cloak & Dagger Season 2 Story
Freeform has released a trailer for Cloak & Dagger season 2 that shows Tandy and Tyrone have fully embraced their superhero ways after saving New Orleans. They're training together and learning what else they can accomplish, both on their own and when their powers are combined. Instead of looking into Roxxon as they did in season 1, Cloak & Dagger season 2 will put a sex trafficking ring at the center of the story. They're going to attempt to free all the girls who have been forced into this trade and use their heroic skills to do so.
However, a transformed O'Reilly is also looking into the missing girls, and she won't use the same tactics as her former allies. As Mayhem, she's willing to kill whoever she must in order to accomplish this goal. The trailer indicates that Tandy and Tyrone could briefly see their partnership end due to a disagreement over O'Reilly's methods. This may split up the Divine Pairing for a portion of the season, forcing them each to grow on their own even more, before likely finding their way back to one another to save the day. Mayhem does appear to be the main villain of the season, but the showrunners have also previously teased that Mr. Jip could be introduced, and more surprises could be in store.
Will Cloak & Dagger Season 3 Happen?
Freeform has yet to formally announce any plans for Cloak & Dagger season 3, but there's been no indication that Freeform or Marvel are looking to end the series already. That said, the fate of the series may very well depend on how Cloak & Dagger season 2 performs and what Marvel TV's long-term plan for the future is. Regardless, the second season will likely leave the show in a place where more stories can be told if an official renewal happens, but also hopefully serve as a satisfying conclusion if it does not. Of course, fans will be holding out extra hope it continues so the often teased Runaways crossover has a better chance of actually happening - once the Hulu series is picked up for its own third season.
Cloak & Dagger season 2 debuts on April 4 on Freeform.
