The creator of Gears of War and co-designer of Unreal is teasing an new, unannounced project. While the Gears of War series' latest release was 2019's Gears 5 under Microsoft's The Coalition, Cliff Bleszinski has not been involved with the series since the 2011 release of Gears of War 3.

Since Bleszinski and Epic Games departed the franchise, Gears Of War developer The Coalition has remained busy, even helping 343 Industries with Halo Infinite. As for Bleszinski himself, he's had some bad luck in the games industry since leaving the Gears of War series and Epic. He was the director of 2017's LawBreakers, which was received some critical praise but folded after being unable to capture a large enough playerbase to sustain its servers and was taken offline the following year. His most recent game, colorful battle royale Radical Heights, was canceled before it could even make it out of Early Access.

Late Tuesday night, Cliff Bleszinski teased a new project on Twitter. Out of the blue, Bleszinski tweeted that he's currently "working on new stuff" that he claims has been "agonizing to not talk about." Indie developer Rami Ismail made an appearance in the replies to further tease fans, saying, "It's so good that I need updates." However, the Gears of War creator later clarified that his unannounced may not be a game at all, but it wouldn't be the first time that Blesinszki swore off game development.

With few to no clues, it is hard to even speculate what Bleszinski's next move is. The Coalition is hiring for future projects, which many assume to be an unannounced Gears 6. It's always possible that Bleszinski could return to the series that made him a gaming household name. However, he seems to be leaning heavily in the "new" angle with whatever he's teasing, so a Gears of War comeback seems as unlikely as ever.

Bleszinski's entries are some of the more positively reviewed Gears of War titles, so its natural that some still remain hopeful to see him return to the shooter franchise. There's also the dedicated (albeit small) fanbase surrounding LawBreakers, who would surely love to see him try his hand at a similar arena shooter experience. For now, though, it could be a long time before the public gets more hints as to what the next move is for the Gears of War creator.
