Kevin Smith celebrates Clerks III's final day of filming with a look back at how long it took to make and a tease of the film's editing process. The latest installment in Smith's comedic series will see Randal Graves having survived a heart attack and using his second at life to make a movie about his and buddy Dante Hicks' lives working at the Quick Stop convenience store and video rental shop next door. Clerks III will feature the returns of original cast members Brian O'Halloran as Dante, Jeff Anderson as Dante, Marilyn Ghigliotti as Veronica Loughran, Rosario Dawson as Becky Scott, Trevor Fehrman as Elias Grover, Jason Mewes as Jay and Smith as Silent Bob.

Smith made his feature debut with 1994's Clerks, which received rave reviews from critics and was a box office success upon release. The filmmaker would use this success to launch the View Askewniverse, a series of interconnected films tied together by recurring characters and references to events in other films, with the primary link being Jay and Silent Bob. After exploring the horror genre for a few years, Smith would return to the View Askewniverse with 2019's Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, which performed poorly at the box office in its limited run but received generally positive reviews from critics and audiences alike.

Smith's journey to bring Clerks III to life has been one of the most admirable in film and a testament to his drive as an independent filmmaker, always pressing ahead and never giving up. The announcement that the film was finally greenlit for production at Lionsgate earlier this month proved to be exciting news for longtime View Askewniverse fans and the swift nature of the production itself is rather impressive. That being said, Smith has frequently proven himself to be an efficient director in regards to timetables, with Clerks and Jay and Silent Bob Reboot having been shot in just 21 days.

It is interesting to see Smith confirm that not only is editing on Clerks III already underway, but that he has put together an hour cut of the film. This accelerated turnaround effort for the film certainly points to Smith and Lionsgate looking to bring it to audiences as soon as possible, though no release date is currently set for the threequel. Only time will tell if Clerks III can live up to fans' anticipation for the long wait and Smith's own promises of a "funny as f-ck" film.
