Kevin Smith confirms Clerks 3 is in the works, adding that the script for the sequel is being totally rewritten. Released in 1994, Clerks was met with positive reviews and has been widely perceived as launching Smith’s career. A buddy comedy, Clerks spawned a sequel, a number of related projects, and now it seems that a third installment in the series is once again a possibility. The first film followed the character of Dante Hicks (Brian O’Halloran). Called into work at a convenience store to cover for another employee’s shift, Hicks spends the day debating a wide variety of subjects and philosophizing with his best friend who works at the video rental store next door. It ends up being a far more memorable day than he first expected.

Clerks was Smith’s debut feature film, achieving a legacy for its realism as well as the many memorable characters that populated the screen. A number of those characters would even go on to make cameos in other films or, in the case of Jay & Silent Bob, they’d graduate into their own separate franchise. A sequel, Clerks II, was released in 2006. It was a success, both critically and commercially. Since then, news of a third installment has occasionally surfaced in the headlines. Taking to social media, Smith confirmed that Clerks 3 is in the works. The prolific director also revealed some details on the project.

In a Facebook post, Smith noted that Clerks 3 is intended as the conclusion of a saga. He described the story of the third installment in optimistic terms, sharing that the movie is about how it’s never too late for a person to completely change their life. He also confirmed that O’Halloran and Jeff Anderson, the leads in the first two movies, would be reprising their roles. Smith and Jason Mewes would return as well, in a supporting capacity. One change, Smith pointed out, was that the script would be completely new, as opposed to the screenplay that had been proposed years ago.

Clerks 3 is only one of the projects that Smith now has on his plate. Highly successful, and boasting his own film universe, he will next be seen in Jay and Silent Bob Reboot. He is also the writer and director of Kilroy Was Here, an upcoming horror anthology starring Chris Jericho.

Clerks 3 stands out, however, among the rest. Anticipated, and remembered for hilariously capturing the mood of a particular moment, there will always be a level of risk attached in sequels to beloved classics. From Smith’s post, heartfelt and clearly excited for the opportunity, it looks like he has a plan to conclude the saga of Clerks properly with Clerks 3.
