Winning a multiplayer bout of Halo often takes a mixture of both luck and skill on the battlefield, and nothing exemplifies that more than one legendary gamer who managed to snag the ever-powerful Sniper Rifle via a well-placed grenade blast while playing the original Halo: Combat Evolved. Given Halo’s status as a competitive multiplayer FPS of choice for nearly two decades at this point, there is no shortage of stories involving players coming up with new and creative ways to get a head-up on the competition.

From picking out ideal kill-camp spots on Halo maps to the always humiliating art of “tea-bagging” a fallen enemy by repeatedly crouching on top of their corpse, the Halo multiplayer community has grown into a culture all its own since the original Halo game first hit the Xbox back in 2001. This, in turn, has led to a variety of stories and YouTube videos of players performing incredible feats of skill or luck to either take down a hard-to-reach opponent or gain a new weapon in Halo's multiplayer, with such acts gaining a fair bit of fame and notoriety over the years.

Reddit user u/bidoofman87 posted a clip of this crafty Halo trick shot on the Gaming subreddit a couple of days ago, one that dates back to the old days of the original game. It depicts a player gaining access to a far-away Sniper Rifle pick-up while playing a multiplayer round of Halo: Combat Evolved by tossing a grenade at its general area. The resulting explosion sends the weapon flying toward the lucky player, who then uses it to bust a headshot on an opponent shortly after claiming his reward. This clip has been wildly spread throughout gaming forums over the years, with many fans regarding it as one of the greatest plays in the history of the franchise. Check it out below:

Impressive stories like this are all the timelier as the updated Halo: The Master Chief Collection is currently being released piecemeal on Steam, with the latest addition being Halo: Combat Evolved itself. Players were taken by surprise as the original Halo game dropped on Valve’s platform out of the blue last month following the similar re-release of 2010’s Halo: Reach back in December. Fueling the resulting nostalgia is the Steam port’s ability to switch between The Master Chief Collection’s remastered multiplayer audio and the original sounds from 2001, allowing players to recreate the feeling of old-school Halo multiplayer bouts.

With both The Master Chief Collection being made readily available on Steam and the upcoming Halo: Infinity set to arrive on the Xbox Series X at some point in the near future, it’s nice to look back on the amazing feats performed by Halo players during multiplayer matches, such as the iconic one featured above. Fans might not be exactly sure how this gamer’s plan of blasting the Sniper Rifle to him with a grenade worked, but it remains an awesome visual and spectacular display of tactical skill all the same. The Master Chief himself would be impressed.
