To kick off the week leading up to Christmas, Screen Rant has a couple of bits of info about the upcoming historical action epic, Clash of the Titans, courtesy of the LA Times Hero Complex. The guys over there got a chance to catch up with star Sam Worthington backstage at a special screening of Avatar, and the conversation turned towards Clash of the Titans.
Worthington said that Warner Bros. were so happy with what director Louis Leterrier (The Incredible Hulk) has done on previous films, that they increased the budget for Titans. This has lead to, that's right, you guessed it - reshoots. Worthington said:
"We're going to be going back and shooting more scenes for it, they cut loose with some money so we can add to it... We're going to be shooting more scenes in January, so we're going to be right up against it -- the movie comes out in March."
This reshooting news comes after similar news about the upcoming dark Western comic book adaptation, Jonah Hex, also set for reshoots in January. Now, with Jonah Hex it smells like trouble to me, particularly because a new director is apparently being brought in for the reshoots (not good...). But with Titans it sounds like more of a case of having more money than they initially thought possible, and they just want to touch up certain things. I could be wrong, and maybe Worthington is just giving "nicey-nice" generic answers to cover up any trouble, but I honestly don't think that's the case.
Worthington continues with the reasoning for the reshoots, which includes a bombshell (sarcasm alert!) that the movie may be shown in another form than just regular 2D:
"There WERE some creaky parts but they are the parts that we KNEW were creaky and that we knew were going to be creaky GOING into it. The studio is also letting us add some gods and scenes. And they're talking about making the movie a 3D film."
So surprise, surprise, the studio is talking about converting the movie for 3D, even though it was never shot for that purpose. That means that any of the 3D moments won't be to enhance the overall experience in any sort of subtle way, but will just be another case of the annoying-as-hell thing of stuff coming out of the screen at you for no good reason. I really don't understand why every second blockbuster movie these days wants to jump on the 3D bandwagon - unless it was filmed for that purpose (Up, Avatar) then I just don't see the point.
What do you think of Clash of the Titans reshooting? Signs of trouble or understandable since they've got more money than they first thought to play with? Are you happy the movie may be in 3D, taking into consideration it wasn't shot in that form?
Clash of the Titans hits theaters on March 26th, 2010. With their January reshoot plan, they better hurry...
