Claire Rehfuss, of The Amazing Race 34’s Derek and Claire, stares down her fear of heights in a preview for episode 10. Derek and Claire, a couple who met while filming Big Brother, have been strong competitors on The Amazing Race. The pair have performed well so far and are one of the few remaining teams.

The second half of the season’s second mega leg features a high-wire challenge that rattles Claire’s resolve. A clip shared by Us Weekly shows Claire visibly trembling and loudly vocalizing her fear, but not backing down, as she slowly makes her way across the wire. Of course, there’s always a twist to challenges on The Amazing Race, which is why the Big Brother alums decided that Claire should be the one to tackle it. At the end of the high-wire, contestants had to correctly identify a specific flag. In the clip, Derek notes that Claire “has a great memory, which is part of why I was happy for her to do this one.”

Will The Amazing Race Moment Be Claire’s Triumph, Or Downfall?

Derek Xiao and Claire Rehfuss from Big Brother with Derek smiling and Claire holding up her hands in peace sign.

But Derek also points out (correctly) that fear can have a major impact on the brain, potentially impeding memory. Meanwhile, fellow racer Aubrey Ares shouts encouragement, but Claire shuts her down, head bent as she wills herself to keep going. In the clip, we see Claire complete the high-wire walk. But not the flag identification task that follows. It remains to be seen if Claire’s panic will prevent her from identifying the flag.

Claire and Derek have been fan favorites since the beginning of the season. They are an interesting combination of nerdy and surprisingly athletic. And they seem to get along well not only with each other, but also with the other teams, despite Derek and Claire’s noted hesitance to make alliances. And they appear to have a strong sense of their individual strengths and weaknesses, and who is best equipped to meet each challenge. Which makes their decision for Claire to walk the wire somewhat surprising, no matter how good her memory may be.

For fans, it would be heartbreaking for this team to leave the race due to a bad choice in task assignment. Claire’s inability to yodel cost them some time in The Amazing Race episode 2, but they bounced back quickly and have otherwise run an excellent race. But panic is different than a tin ear, and fighting through it could be a real challenge. If she is successful, this could go down in history as one of the show’s top fan favorite moments. But if she fails, Derek and Claire will end up as just another team in a long line of The Amazing Race contestants who did really well until a single horrible mistake cost them everything.
