Robert Englund Cast in 'Chuck' Season 4

Chuck is one of the best television shows of the past three years, in this Screen Rant writer’s humble opinion. It’s the perfect combination of the action, comedy, and spy-thriller genres - a la Spies Like Us - with a great cast, great characters, smart writing, and the best Die Hard references this side of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Community.

Despite worries last spring that Chuck wouldn’t be picked up for season number four—especially considering the requisite cliffhanger during the season 3 finale—the show was renewed and fans have since seen a flurry of outstanding casting announcements - not the least of which, according to Entertainment Weekly, is that Robert Englund (A Nightmare On Elm Street) will be playing a midseason villain.

More specifically, Englund will be playing an evil scientist (par for the Chuck course) named Dr. Wheelwright, an individual with the ability to transform Chuck’s every waking moment into a living nightmare. Sound familiar? Yeah, well, that’s probably because it’s a reference to the role that made Englund famous, that of poor, innocent burn victim, Freddy Krueger.

Previous casting announcements for Chuck Season Four include Linda Hamilton (Terminator 2) as Chuck’s mom, Timothy Dalton (Licence to Kill), Olivia Munn (Iron Man 2), Isaiah Mustafa (the Old Spice guy), Dolph Lundgren (The Expendables), Eric Roberts (The Dark Knight), Nicole Richie (The Simple Life) in a reoccurring role, Joel David Moore (Avatar), and Bronson Pinchot (Beverly Hills Cop), amongst others.

Chuck fandom and all that great casting aside, Timothy Dalton would be enough for me to watch every single moment of every single episode this season—even the episodes sans Timothy Dalton—just in anticipation of his onscreen presence. He’s the second best James Bond after James Bond himself, Sean Connery—again, in this Screen Rant writer’s oh so humble opinion—and any fan of Hot Fuzz can attest to his comedic talent as well.

Truth be told, great casting on Chuck is nothing new. Besides the principals, the series has seen everyone from Scott Bakula (Quantum Leap) to Chevy Chase (Community) to Brandon Routh (Superman Returns) and more, all of whom were implemented logically, comfortably, and in really clever and fun ways. Hopefully, the most recent casting announcements will drive the ratings up for Chuck, if only slightly, but I wouldn’t hold my breath if I were me. And I am. So I won’t.

For those who’ve yet to see it, here’s the trailer for Chuck season 4:

Chuck Season 4 premieres September 20th @ 8/7 c on NBC. Robert Englund debuts in episode six, entitled ‘Chuck Versus the Aisle of Terror.’ It would behoove movie geeks and genre fans everywhere not to miss it.
