There are several A Christmas Story returning characters in the 2022 sequel, A Christmas Story Christmas. Originally released in 1983, Bob Clark's movie is heralded as one of the best Christmas movies ever made. Starring Peter Billingsley as Ralphie, A Christmas Story followed one fateful holiday for the Parker family when Ralphie was 9 years old and wanted a Red Ryder Carbine Action 200-shot Range Model air rifle from Santa. Despite the film's iconic status, A Christmas Story Christmas represents a chance to return to the story nearly 40 years later. The film is an HBO Max original and releases on the streaming service on November 17, 2022.

As a sequel to A Christmas Story, the movie obviously features a handful of characters from the original film. The first A Christmas Story Christmas trailer provided a look at the returning characters and their roles in Ralphie's next Christmas adventure. While the sequel includes several cast members who were not part of the original movie, such as Ralphie's wife Sandy (Erinn Hayes) and their children, the majority of A Christmas Story's 2022 sequel characters will be familiar to those who have seen the 1983 film. Even in instances where the movie cannot use certain characters and actors, like Darren McGavin as Ralphie's father, A Christmas Story Christmas still finds a way to honor them.

Peter Billingsley as Ralphie Parker

A Christmas Story Christmas Peter Billingsley Ralphie

It would not be a real A Christmas Story sequel without the return of Peter Billingsley as Ralphie Parker. When audiences last saw Peter Billingsley in the A Christmas Story franchise, Ralphie was just a 9-year-old kid worried about shooting his eye out and getting in trouble for cursing. A Christmas Story Christmas shows what life is like for Ralphie as an adult, paying off adult Ralphie's narration from the original film. He is married in the sequel and has two kids, and he becomes stressed from the pressure to make Christmas as special as he remembers it to be from his childhood. Despite being all grown up, A Christmas Story's 2022 sequel still shows Ralphie's mischievous nature.

In the nearly 40 years since Peter Billingsley played Ralphie in A Christmas Story, he has only sparingly acted in new projects, especially as an adult. Billingsley filmed a cameo for a modern Christmas classic in Elf, while he also appeared in The Break-Up in a small role. His other most notable role has come through the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as he appeared in Iron Man and Spider-Man: Far From Home as William Ginter Riva. Peter Billingsley returning for A Christmas Story Christmas represents his first major leading role in decades.

Ian Petrella as Randy Parker

A Christmas Story Christmas Randy

Another original movie character returning for A Christmas Story Christmas is Randy Parker, with Ian Petrella returning to the role. Randy is Ralphie's younger brother who used to love eating like a pig. Details on Randy's return in A Christmas Story's sequel have yet to be fully revealed. He is featured with the Parker family as part of what looks to be a big Christmas dinner. Ian Petrella has not appeared in many movies or shows before returning in the HBO Max November 2022 release, as his last credited role was in 2015's Quarter Bin. All that is known for certain is that Randy will be in A Christmas Story's 2022 sequel and share some time with his family again.

Scott Schwartz as Flick

A Christmas Story Christmas Flick

A Christmas Story Christmas also features more of Scott Schwartz as Flick, one of Ralphie's closest friends. He has a memorable role in the original film thanks to being triple-dog-dared into licking a frozen pole outside, which resulted in his tongue being frozen to the pole. Flick's return in A Christmas Story's 2022 sequel will show what life is like for him as an adult. This includes Flick apparently owning a bar. He is not completely over the previous triple dog dare either, as the movie includes him using the phrase to force another friend to do something dumb. Scott Schwartz has appeared in a variety of projects since being in the perfect Christmas movie, such as Doll Killer 2.

R. D. Robb as Schwartz

A Christmas Story Christmas Schwartz Triple Dog Dare

Another one of Ralphie's friends returns in A Christmas Story Christmas, as R.D. Robb is back as Schwartz. He is the one responsible for issuing the triple dog dare that makes Flick lick the frozen pole. What has happened to Schwartz since A Christmas Story appears to include becoming a mechanic of some sort based on his attire in the sequel's trailer. He has also yet to live down the original triple dog dare, as Flick uses the phrase against him to make Schwartz sled down a giant slide. R.D. Robb has recently played a recurring character in The Goldbergs but otherwise is not very active as an actor in recent years.

Zack Ward as Scut Farkus

A Christmas Story Christmas Scut Farkus

Ralphie's childhood bully Scut Farkus is another original movie character returning in A Christmas Story Christmas. Scut constantly terrorizes Ralphie and his friends as kids, but his return in the A Christmas Story sequel will show if he has matured. He can be seen wearing his usual animal fur winter hat, while his braces also remain all these years later. The only glimpse at Scut in A Christmas Story Christmas shows him punching his hands together, indicating he might still be a bit of a bully as an adult. Zack Ward returns to play adult Scut Farkus in the Christmas Story 2022 sequel after recently having roles in Z Nation and American Horror Story season 7.

Julie Hagerty as Mrs. Parker

A Christmas Story Christmas Mrs Parker

Viewers will also see Ralphie's mom, Mrs. Parker, again in A Christmas Story's sequel, but with a twist. Viewers will remember that Melinda Dillon played Ralphie's mother in the original movie. However, the future Oscar-nominated actress has not acted since 2007, as she retired before she could return for the sequel. Instead of writing Mrs. Parker out of A Christmas Story Christmas like the sequel does for Mr. Parker, the decision was made to recast Ralphie's mom with Julie Hagerty taking over the role.

A Christmas Story's 2022 sequel revisits Mrs. Parker's life when she is a grandmother and struggling emotionally since her husband is not around for Christmas anymore. She still lives in the original A Christmas Story house that Ralphie grew up in. Viewers might recognize Julie Hagerty from her roles in Airplane! or Black Monday. She also recently appeared in Disney's Christmas movie Noelle as Mrs. Claus, but taking over the role of Mrs. Parker from Melinda Dillon in A Christmas Story Christmas holds more importance.
