Netflix's new sequel, The Christmas Chronicles 2, contains a brief easter egg reference to Catherine O'Hara's character in Home Alone. While The Christmas Chronicles 2 has received lackluster reviews from critics, the series has been a success for Netflix. The Christmas Chronicles 2, which debuted on November 25, 2020, continues the story of The Christmas Chronicles. In the first movie, Kate and Teddy help Santa save Christmas. The second film primarily follows Kate, who becomes bitter when her mom begins dating someone. The Christmas Chronicles 2 takes a deeper dive into Santa lore, and introduces some evil elf shenanigans, but, unsurprisingly, Kate and Santa once again save Christmas.

Kate and Santa become stranded at an airport when their time travel machine runs out of AAA batteries after they're sent back in time by bad elf Belsnickel. While Kate goes to buy more batteries (and ends up being arrested), Santa becomes distracted. Santa is trying to bring some Christmas cheer to the holiday travelers when he spots an altercation happening at the ticket counter. When all flights from the airport are suddenly canceled, the airline agent at the counter attempts to soothe a frantic woman by offering her a complimentary hotel. The woman screeches in a distinct and familiar tone while slamming her fist on the desk, “I don’t want a free hotel room! I want a flight to Chicago right now!”

Though her hair is blonde and not red, the woman is obviously a reference to Catherine O’Hara’s character in the classic Christmas film, Home Alone. In Home Alone, the McCallister family has planned a trip to Paris, but when their digital alarm clocks stop working because of a brief power outage, they oversleep. The panicked family rushes to the airport, nearly missing their flight. It isn't until they are halfway to Paris before Kate McCallister realizes that her son, Kevin, has been left behind at their home in an Illinois suburb. After bartering her way from Paris to Scranton, Kate loses her cool when an airline desk agent offers her a hotel room in lieu of a flight to Chicago.

The Christmas Chronicles 2’s reference to Home Alone is brief, yet recognizable enough to be considered an easter egg without requiring further proof. Still, there’s some solid evidence that confirms the easter egg. In The Christmas Chronicles 2, Kate and Santa are stranded in the year 1990 – the same year Home Alone was released. Coupled with the fact that Chris Columbus directed both Home Alone and The Christmas Chronicles 2, the frantic woman in the 1990 airport is definitely a reference to Kate McCallister.

Catherine O’Hara’s iconic performance as Kate McCallister is a delightful easter egg in The Christmas Chronicles 2, which also references other Christmas classics like Elf. While The Christmas Chronicles 2 may not become a Christmas classic on the level of Elf or Home Alone, it’s a fine addition to The Christmas Chronicles series and the success of both films means that Netflix will continue to make more sequels with more Christmas easter eggs.
