Chris Hemsworth, who portrays Thor in the MCU, shared a touching moment he had with Robert Downey Jr. when they were on the set of Avengers: Endgame, and the story proves that the original team roster can't be beat. The original Avengers team was small, consisting only of Thor, Iron Man, Captain America, Hawkeye, Black Widow, and the Hulk. With such a tight group, not only did the characters bond more on-screen but so did their actors in real life. The original MCU cast worked together across four team-based movies spanning nearly 10 years, so they all grew together as the franchise took the world by storm.

In a podcast interview, Hemsworth fondly recalled working with Downey while admitting that filming Avengers: Endgame was one of the highlights of his time in the MCU so far. He spoke about cast interactions on set, such as when the Iron Man actor praised a scene that Hemsworth had improved as Thor. What could have just been a small interaction highlights the closeness that the cast had with one another. Whether on set or on screen, the original Avengers were truly something special that would be hard to replicate.

Why Future Avengers Teams Will Be Very Different From The Original

As the MCU has grown as a franchise, many more heroes have entered the equation. At the time of The Avengers, there were just the core six members, with more heroes being added slowly later. But the foundation of the original cast's bond had been set, and the smaller team remained a tight unit throughout the span of MCU Phases 1-3. Now MCU Phase 4 has introduced many new Avengers characters who join the older heroes who survived Endgame.

While audiences have two new Avengers movies to look forward to with Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars, the magic of the smaller team is gone for good. The MCU cast is simply too large now, and it is likely these movies will be similar to Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame as they will feature dozens of characters who may not even interact. While this does make for exciting storytelling, it has taken away the intimacy of a smaller group that had the chance to bond throughout several movies.

The MCU is carefully setting up several new teams, such as the Thunderbolts, the Young Avengers, and the Midnight Sons, but they haven't revealed the new Avengers. While Thor would have been a strong contender to make a comeback to the team before Chris Hemsworth revealed his last MCU movie may be coming soon, it's actually the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) who may make a reappearance. Audiences have seen the MCU start to dive into more Hulk-based storylines, and it doesn't appear the character is retired yet. As the new team forms in the wake of Avengers: Endgame, it remains to be seen who will join the Hulk to become an official Avenger.
