Thor: Ragnarok actor Chris Hemsworth has shared an emotional and touching video in tribute to his character’s destroyed hammer, Mjolnir. Comic book superheroes are often defined by their armor and weapons. Whether it be Captain America’s patriotic shield, Tony Stark’s Iron Man suit, or Thor’s hammer, many of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s key figures are rarely seen without their favored weapon at hand.
Unfortunately for the God of Thunder, Thor: Ragnarok features the destruction of the famous Asgardian hammer, Mjolnir, at the hands of the Goddess of Death, Hela. Mjolnir’s destruction was a key moment in both the marketing campaign for Ragnarok and, indeed, the movie itself, and as the hilarious Korg points out, the loss of Mjolnir affects the Avenger on a deeply emotional level.
Hemsworth shared a heartfelt video on Twitter today that perfectly captures the current grief of the Marvel fandom. Listed as having existed from “The Beginning of Time” until “2017,” the video painfully recounts Mjolnir’s demise before going on to provide a greatest hits-style highlights package. Of course, Korg’s wonderful “the hammer pulled you off” line is included, as is some additional Ragnarok footage from the same scene which sees Thor attempt to throw a regular hammer Mjolnir-style. You can watch the video in the section above.
Interestingly, Hemsworth hasn’t shared anything in reference to the passing of his fictional father Odin, though, to be fair, Mjolnir wasn’t responsible for locking away and covering up the entire existence of Thor’s biological sister, Hela, after using her power to conquer multiple planets. It’s somewhat harder, however, to find an excuse for him not mentioning the Warriors Three’s fate or the destruction of Asgard.
Despite Mjolnir’s destruction in Thor: Ragnarok, some fans have wondered whether the iconic weapon will be making a return in either of the two forthcoming Avengers movies. Certainly, the hammer is a proven merchandise-shifter and it would be strange to see the God of Thunder without the item for his next two adventures. It surely wouldn’t be unrealistic – as far as realism goes when talking about a flying hammer – to see Mjolnir reforged in a future movie.
With that said, the destruction of Mjolnir in Thor: Ragnarok did lead to some vital character development for the title character. While mourning the loss of the weapon, Thor was reminded by his deceased father that he was not the “God of Hammers” but the “God of Thunder” and the hero responded to this jibe by unleashing some nifty lightning-based offense upon Hela. Whether the destruction of Thor’s hammer proves permanent or not, for now, Rest In Peace Mjolnir of Asgard. You will be missed.
