Chris Evans Talks First Day on The Avengers

The Avengers had a big day in the blogosphere yesterday with Kevin Feige discussing the film’s mystery bad guys and photos of Cap, Iron Man, Thor, and Black Widow gracing the cover(s) of Empire magazine.

Today, we have part of an interview with Chris Evans from the pages of that magazine, detailing his first day on the set of Joss Whedon’s The Avengers.

From the March 2012 issue of Empire, Chris Evans said:

"The first time I came on set and saw other people in costume, it was a night-time scene in the woods and it involved myself, Chris Hemsworth and Downey Jr. I had just seen ‘Thor’ maybe two nights before, so I got on set and I saw Hemsworth in the cape and immediately thought, 'God, there's Thor, I'm looking at Thor,' and then I saw Downey Jr. in the suit.”

It’s interesting that Evans waited so long to watch Thor. Maybe he didn’t buy into the Rotten Tomatoes-fueled hype like everybody else?

On the surreal experience of seeing Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man and Chris Hemsworth as Thor in person, Evans said:

“It [was] amazing. The kid in me would say, 'I didn't get to act with Robert Downey Jr., I got to act with Iron Man.' I'd never had that before, where I had seen actors in a film that I was not a part of and then come to work and help them to extend that character's life. It's like being a little kid."

Hopefully, that childlike glee contributed to the quality of Evans’ acting onscreen, as the brunt of the narrative is going to be resting on Captain America’s shoulders.

At this point, I wouldn’t mind seeing more footage from The Avengers. What we saw of the The Avengers trailer was generic and vague. Now, maybe there was a reason for that – maybe Whedon is saving the best stuff for the actual theatrical experience. Fair enough.

That said, with the film less than four months away, I'd like to be more excited for Marvel’s super-team, and some more revealing footage might be just what the doctor ordered.

The Avengers hits theaters May 4th, 2012.
