In 2021, Chopped expanded its franchise to include the new Chopped: Next Gen spin-off. Chopped has been a Food Network staple since 2009. Even now as it reaches season 46, the series just continues to build momentum. As a result, the spin-off's introduction to streaming services has gained Chopped even more fans. Now, new and old Chopped fans can watch the series directly on Food Network’s site, as well as on streaming services such as Hulu and Discovery+.

The introduction of Discovery+ has allowed Chopped to add content that is exclusive to the streaming platform. On April 20, 2021, a.k.a. 420 - unofficially known as the national day of cannabis - the franchise introduced the first new Chopped series for Discovery+, which is called Chopped: 420. This series had five episodes and focused on chefs integrating cannabis into their meals. On May 25, 2021, Chopped introduced a new exclusive Discovery+ series: Chopped: Next Gen. This one is closer in makeup to the original series, so let’s explore some ways that Next Gen is similar and different from the original Chopped show.

Different Hosts

One of the major differences between Chopped and Chopped: Next Gen is that Ted Allen hosts the original series, while Liza Koshy hosts the new one. The former Queer Eye For The Straight Guy cast member has been hosting Chopped since it originally premiered. Liza Koshy is an internet star, especially on Vine and Youtube, and also has past hosting experience. For instance, she hosted the Double Dare reboot between 2018 and 2019. Both of these hosts bring enthusiasm, warmth, and a little bit of commentary to their roles.

Different Settings

Chopped usually takes place in an indoor kitchen studio. On the other hand, Chopped: Next Gen takes place in an outdoor kitchen. This change in setting is likely due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as the Chopped Next Gen production company is attempting to meet the new safety protocols. If the series gets another season, it will hopefully continue with the outdoor kitchen setting. It adds a little drama to the show, as the viewers watch the contestants having to wait for the pizza oven.

An Emphasis On Innovation

Chopped: Next Gen is about being innovative with dishes, cooking techniques, and more. It’s all about taking food to the next level. Even though the original Chopped series may encourage and appreciate when chefs are experimental with their dishes and food, it isn’t the main priority. In fact, the main priority is creating tasty meals. Chopped: Next Gen is also clearly aiming for a younger audience with its emphasis on new and younger chefs.

New Judges

The judges on both series rotate but Chopped usually has the same type of judges coming to the table. They’re usually judges that are further in their careers, established, and very well-known--especially to TV cooking show fansChopped: Next Gen includes well-known and established chefs as well, but they’re usually more newly established chefs. Chefs Mei Lin, Nyesha Arrington, and Esdras Ochoa are regulars on Chopped: Next Gen.

Both Series Have The Same DNA

Despite the few differences, Chopped and Chopped: Next Gen both follow the same format. The two shows include four chefs, 1 chef being eliminated each round, and three dishes to make within that episode. One Chopped champion is crowned at the end of each episode.
