Disney+ has released the full trailer for the upcoming animation/live-action hybrid film Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers. First created in 1943 by Disney for the Pluto animated short Private Pluto, the characters of Chip and Dale finally starred in their own television series in 1989 with Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers. The titular chipmunks ran their own detective agency called the Rescue Rangers along with their friends, an Australian cheese-loving mouse Monterey Jack, pilot and inventor Gadget Hackwrench, and housefly Zipper. The animated show ran for three seasons, concluding in 1990.

The upcoming film re-imagines Chip and Dale within a meta universe where animated characters live alongside humans. Dale (Andy Samberg) has embraced his cult status and frequents pop culture conventions for his fans. Meanwhile, Chip (John Mulaney) has turned his back on the past and works as an insurance salesman. Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers is reminiscent of the 1988 neo-noir comedy Who Framed Roger Rabbit? in the sense that their worlds resemble each other. Coincidentally, Roger Rabbit will make a cameo appearance in the upcoming film.

Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers promises to be a film filled with non-stop comedy and adventure, bursting at the seams with cameos plucked from Disney's expansive library. Will Arnett stars as a much older and far more disgruntled version of Disney's 1953 version of Peter Pan. Seth Rogen also joins the cast as Bob, a Viking dwarf who bumps into the CGI version of the warthog Pumbaa from Disney's live-action The Lion King remake, also voiced by Rogen. Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers is set to deliver a healthy dose of nostalgia through its use of seemingly hundreds of guest appearances.

Nostalgia is part of a current trend fueling Hollywood's push for legacy sequels and reboots, and Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers seems to exemplify that. Not only is it rebooting the titular duo, it is pulling from years of Disney IP to develop its world. For example, the new trailer also features references to The Little Mermaid and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. This is an approach that could lead to some fun for audiences, but also runs the risk of Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers being a bit overstuffed. It could also lead to the film poking fun at the current sequel/reboot craze, even while contributing to it. At the very least, it looks like Disney has found a unique way to bring Chip and Dale back to the forefront, and it'll be interesting to see how it shakes out in the end.
