The first photos have been released for Netflix's The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina TV series. Mad Men's Kiernan Shipka as the eponymous teenaged (half-)witch is joined here by Miranda Otto (Homeland) and Lucy Davis (Wonder Woman) as her witchy aunts Hilda and Zelda, respectively.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is based on the comic book property of the same name, which artist Robert Hack and Archie Comics Chief Creative Officer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa launched back in 2014. A far cry from the sunny '90s sitcom Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, Netflix's Sabrina TV series will follow in its source material's footsteps by drawing inspiration from classic supernatural horror films and TV shows that have come before it (with Rosemary's Baby and The Exorcist among the influences named in the series' plot summary). Chilling Adventures and its fellow Archie Comics adaptation Riverdale on The CW are both run by Aguirre-Sacasa, but for now there are no official plans to have the shows crossover in the foreseeable future.

At the same time, Riverdale and Chilling Adventures are expected to have more than a few things in common; including, stylized visuals and the way they directly reference the horror-thriller classics that inspired them. Riverdale has become well known for its stylish noir color palette and horror film homages (especially after its second season) and Chilling Adventures looks to follow suit in that approach, based on the first photos from the show's freshman season. You can check out both images below, courtesy of Netflix:

The first of these images shows Shipka as Sabrina Spellman in her trademark red outfit, making what will undoubtedly be one of several trips out in the woods near her hometown (Greendale, in the original comics). Chilling Adventures of Sabrina the TV series, like the comics, will focus on Sabrina's efforts to lead a normal life as a teenager attending Baxter High, despite being a half-witch only just beginning her studies of dark magic and sorcery. However, like the teenagers on Riverdale, Sabrina's dangerous "extra-curricular activities" threaten to do much more that just, say, interfere with her relationship with unsuspecting non-warlock boyfriend Harvey Kinkle (Ross Lynch).

Sabrina can be seen kneeling before Richard Coyle as the villainous Father Blackwood in the second of these photos, with her playful Aunt Zelda, stern Aunt Hilda, and The Weird Sisters (Abigail Cowan, Tati Gabrielle, and Adeline Rudolph) joining her in what appears to be an initiation ceremony of sorts. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is further expected to resemble Riverdale in the way it explores the personal lives of its adult characters, nearly as much as it focuses on its teenaged protagonists' day to day struggles. The latter has found success in appealing to both young adults and older viewers with this method, so it stands to reason that Chilling Adventures will be able to attract a similar audience when it premieres in a couple months from now.
