Following the release of its first two seasons and Christmas special, a prequel novel for Netflix's adaptation of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is coming this summer. Though various backstory elements have already been featured in the comics series on which the show is based, the prequel novel will feature elements that fans of the show haven't seen before with the teenage half-witch.
Based on the Archie Comics comic book series of the same name, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is a darker retelling of Sabrina the Teenage Witch, in which the titular character is forced to balance her life as a mortal with her life as a witch. Complications naturally arise, and Sabrina deals with the everyday complications of being a teenager, as well as decidedly more life threatening worries, like the occasional supernatural foe, a teacher who isn't who she claims to be, and Satan himself. Now, Sabrina's story is growing even more in the form of a prequel novel expected to release sometime summer 2019.
Though there are very little details surrounding any specifics, Amazon is listing a paperback prequel novel from Scholastic titled Season of the Witch (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Book 1) with a July 9, 2019 release, according to TV Source Magazine. Whereas the first few episodes of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina centered around the buildup to Sabrina's 16th birthday (at which point she would be expected to sign her name into the Book of the Beast), the prequel novel will be set a few months earlier, in the summer building up to the new school year. Apart from dealing with Sabrina's inner conflict as to whether or not she'll forsake her mortal life (and friends), she also has to face off against a "mysterious wood spirit" after her cousin Ambrose suggests that Sabrina perform "a spell to discover Harvey's true feelings."
As of now, Scholastic has yet to make an official announcement regarding the novel, but its addition to Amazon speaks for itself. This comes after the announcement of Scholastic planning to release novels based on the Archie Comics-based series Riverdale, which also comes from Chilling Adventures of Sabrina showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina prequel novel will be written by New York Times best-selling author Sara Rees Brennan (the Demon's Lexicon trilogy), who has written a number of young adult fantasy novels.
Following its October 2018 premiere, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is pulling very few punches when it comes to satisfying fans. Though the series had the benefit of popular source material (from the comics to the sitcom to the animated series), it's still managed to make a significant name for itself on Netflix based on its own unique merits - from the cast and atmosphere to the surprising riskiness in its less-than-family-friendly material. If nothing else, the fact that it's one of Screen Rant's top 10 favorite shows of 2018 should speak for itself.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina season 2 premieres April 5, 2019 on Netflix.
