When Netflix's The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina returns for its final season on December 31, the Fright Club will face Eldritch terrors as well as their own fears about growing up. Adapted from showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa's own popular comic run, the series quickly became a fan favorite even as it took on a very different tone from the 90s series that made Sabrina the teenage witch a household name.

As Sabrina (Kiernan Shipka) and her friends prepare one last time to fight against the end of all things, she still has some personal problems to solve on the side. While she and her warlock boyfriend Nick (Gavin Leatherwood) have broken up, she can't help the lingering feelings between them - or the jealousy at seeing her best friends Roz and Theo with their own boyfriends. Can Sabrina learn to stand on her own before giving into her heart again?

At a recent press event for the final season, Shipka and Leatherwood spoke to Screen Rant and several other outlets about the bittersweet feeling of ending the show, the romance that may still be in store for Sabrina and Nick, and some fun moments they got to play out onscreen.

chilling adventures of sabrina - kiernan shipka

You've mentioned before that the theme of Sabrina is chaos, and the twin storyline made it clear that Sabrina needs something to fuel her. What is it about danger that really speaks to her?

Kiernan Shipka: She's a Scorpio and she's also a witch, and I think that it's in her blood. I really do. I think it is just a part of her. She loves danger; she loves excitement. She is rarely bored, because she doesn't let herself be bored. We've never seen an episode where Sabrina is just chilling, and I think that's probably for a reason. That's just how she's built and how she operates.

How did the Spellman Aunt cameos come about, and what was that day on set like?

Kiernan Shipka: I think we always wanted to do something with the original cast, to any capacity that we could. And with the knowledge that this might have been the last go-about, we wanted to cover all of our bases. This felt really full circle; we owe so much to the original show that it only felt right to have the OGs on. And it was so fun.

Why do you think it's so difficult for Sabrina and Nick to not be in each other's orbit?

Kiernan Shipka: Kids, man. Freaking emotional teenagers. There is a push and pull in Sabrina and Nick's relationship that represents maybe a larger theme of the push and pull of the show. Sabrina's duality and their existence is quite complicated, so I think that the relationship lends itself to just more complications because of their complicated lives.

Gavin Leatherwood: Yeah, for sure. I mean, it's almost as if they're in this entanglement. Sabrina showed Nick something that he was so unfamiliar with, which was a form of love that he hadn't seen being just exposed to the witch world. He was mostly lusting after people, and then Sabrina really showed him a different side.

Ever since that, he hasn't been able to really see anything else but that. It's like he's in a bull fight with himself, where he's trying to tame his lusting ways and also understand what unconditional love and what loving someone in a different capacity is. I know that's why Nick can't really stay away from Sabrina. She's made this crazy impact on him.

Kiernan, what was it like for you to tackle two different sides of Sabrina and how much her path can diverge?

Kiernan Shipka: It was really fun for me, because I felt like I knew Sabrina Spellman so well that I could take little bits of Sabrina Spellman and craft this other alternate version of her. I don't know about you guys, but I think about who would I be if I grew up differently; in a different place. That to me is who Sabrina Morningstar is to Sabrina Spellman.

But I think what I love most is just their friendship and their bond. That's just so representative, I think, of our relationship with ourselves and our own dualities. Sabrina has always grappled with her duality, so to actually split Sabrina and show that physically was really powerful, I think. People might think that they become enemies or something, but no, they're best friends. And I think that is so beautiful, and I'm so happy we went that route. Because I think there's a bit of a reckoning that Sabrina has just with herself, literally.

I really like that a part of Sabrina's journey this season is learning to be on her own. Can you talk a little bit about that journey for her, the push and pull between Harvey and Nick, and seeing her friends be with other people while she's left by the wayside?

Kiernan Shipka: Yeah. It's interesting, because it doesn't last that long. It lasts like two seconds, for the sake of the show. But we meet Sabrina in a relationship, and I think that we know Sabrina in a relationship and we know her in a breakup. So, I think that it's kind of interesting to find those moments where she's truly living for herself.

People always ask me, "Is it Nick? Or is it Harvey?" And I'm like, "Girl's 16, she should be dating." Let's get her on Bumble; let's get her on Hinge. She would have the funniest Hinge. So, I'm happy for her. I love those episodes, and I kind of wanted to see more of that and that world. I love Sabrina trying to date; I think that's just so funny to me.

Are you satisfied with how the story has ended, or are there places you wanted it to go in the future?

Kiernan Shipka: Yeah, I am satisfied. I mean, there were moments where I kind of found myself thinking, "Is this the ending that I want? Because this is the ending that we're getting." And yeah, I did. I did, truly. I loved it. It was a "Yes, queen!" yelling ending. I was excited about it, fully.

Gavin Leatherwood: Yeah, part four is lovely. The way that it does end, like Kiernan has said already, it could have continued on. But we did approach it in such a way where we knew that it could potentially [be] the end. So, there's a lot of that in mind as we did it. All of us wanted to bring that sense of closure and finality.

Kiernan Shipka: We wanted to be really invigorating and satisfying and delicious.

What has been your favorite part about playing these characters?

Kiernan Shipka: Oh, man. You get close with characters, and they become a part of you and your life. When I talk about Sabrina, I'm not talking about myself; I'm not talking about myself playing her. I'm talking about her. They become friends and confidantes and vehicles in which you express your emotions. And to let go of that is hard, but it's also beautiful. I think just having Sabrina as a part of my life - I started the show when I was 18, and I wrapped when I was 20. Those are big years; those are very formative years where you're supposed to be screwing up in college. So, I was forever grateful that I had Sabrina during two very big years of my life. Personally, she got me through.

Gavin Leatherwood: You do grow some sort of love for this character that seemingly exists in your mind, and then it becomes something collaborative, and then onscreen, and then it's no longer yours. It's for fans to eat up.

I think there will be a bit of that sort of relief when part four does come out, because it will then be turned over to the fans who deserve this. We've worked really hard on this; the crew and cast, and everyone from the tip of the iceberg all the way down. I'm so excited that we have one more part to give over, and I cannot wait for people to see it. And do not be sad. There are several amazing moments have come from this experience for all of us, and hopefully for everyone that has been watching.

We see a little bit of Sabrina trying to move on this season, but we also see Nick sharing some moments with Prudence. Could you talk about that dynamic?

Gavin Leatherwood: Yeah. When we leave Nick in part three, we see him standing or sitting on those steps outside of the academy and reconciling with Prudence. [He's] kind of coming to terms with the tumultuous nature of part three, and everything that happens. And he's finally able to have a confidante that isn't Sabrina. It is an old friend, which is Prudence, and he's able to sort of feel his feelings.

Because of that, he gets to step back into a place that is a bit more balanced. And we'll see in part four, that he kind of finds his equilibrium again, and gets back in touch with who Nick is and sort of allows that trauma to leave him. Then when he finds some clarity, he remembers how crazy love can drive you. And what an amazingly powerful infectious elusive kind of thing that love is, and he's not done with it. And he wants to understand what the hell that stuff is.

Is there anything that you took from the set as souvenirs to remind you of the four parts your Sabrina journey?

Kiernan Shipka: You know what, it's funny, because we didn't know if it was ending or not. I didn't feel a lot of liberty to take a bunch of stuff.

Sabrina's got so many cool things. She got moose heads and tchotchkes all over her room. I could literally steal the entire room, but I didn't and I kind of wish I did.

Gavin Leatherwood: I'm wearing the underwear that was put in my wardrobe. It is the most comfortable undies ever. I'm not ashamed to say that they're my favorite pair, and that is because of the show.
