A teaser for the upcoming reboot of Child’s Play confirms a trailer is coming this Friday. Child’s Play began as a spec script from writer Don Mancini called Blood Buddy, where a lonely boy is gifted a lifelike doll named Buddy. This boy makes a blood pact with the toy, resulting in it coming to life when he sleeps and going on a killing spree. This concept was reworked into a story about a killer named Charles Lee Ray (Brad Dourif) performing a ritual - as he’s about to die - that places his spirit in a doll. Ray then uses the doll to take revenge on those who wronged him and must find a way out before he’s trapped in the toy forever.

The first Child’s Play was a creepy little horror movie, and it would become arguably one of the strongest horror franchises around. The original series has spawned six sequels, with only Child’s Play 3 being considered a dud. Mancini has been creatively involved with every sequel too and has written and directed the last three movies. The most recent entries – Curse Of Chucky and Cult Of Chucky – have both gone direct to DVD, but received strong reviews none the less.

It was announced MGM & Orion Pictures would reboot Child’s Play last year, and they put together a cast that includes Aubrey Plaza and Brian Tyree Henry (Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse). In the new movie, Chucky will be a high-tech, A.I. Buddi doll, and now Orion Pictures has released a teaser for the film from the Kaslan Corporation. This advert reveals new details about the Buddi doll and that the movie’s trailer will arrive this Friday.

Fans will be eager to see how the new look Child’s Play will reinvent Chucky, but the reboot has proven slightly controversial. Franchise creator Mancini has spoken out against it since the original continuity is still very much active. A Child’s Play TV series recently landed at SyFy which will carry on from the events of Cult Of Chucky, and Mancini fears the reboot will harm the brand. Chucky’s original voice actor Brad Dourif won’t reprise his role for the reboot either.

Chucky is one of a number of iconic horror villains who arrived in the 1980s, including A Nightmare On Elm Street’s Freddy Krueger and Hellraiser’s Pinhead. Following the success of IT, audiences seem excited to see famous horror slashers return to the big screen, which explains revivals such as Halloween and Child’s Play. The plot of the Child’s Play reboot sounds almost identical to the first movie - outside of Chucky’s A.I. origin story - so hopefully, the new movie is bringing something fresh to the concept.
