Stephen King's Children of the Corn is getting the 4K treatment, courtesy of Arrow Video. The classic 80s cult horror film is based on King's short story about a cult of rural children who worship an evil spirit. Although Children of the Corn received mixed reviews upon its premiere, it's now considered by many to be an iconic work of the horror canon.
Per Bloody Disgusting, Children of the Corn will now be made available in 4K resolution by Arrow Video, an indie British film distribution company. The original movie was made using 35mm film, which the 4K restoration will enhance from its negative format for improved clarity. The 4K UHD Blu-ray disc comes packed with insider extras, including audio commentary from the film's director, Fritz Kiersch, and lead child actors, John Franklin and Courtney Gains. The new release is further equipped with a long list of exclusive interviews, video shorts, and a "making of" retrospective.
Arrow Video is also releasing new editions of the Children of the Corn 2 and 3, which will, unfortunately, only be available in the UK. The Children of the Corn trilogy will be sold as a Blu-ray set with more extras, including interviews with Children of the Corn 2 director David Price and Children of the Corn 3 screenwriter Dode Leveson. Each disc also offers the film's original trailer. Both the 4K restoration and the trilogy set will be available for purchase in September.
The new restoration will appeal to horror fanatics, Stephen King completists, and cinephiles alike. Kiersch's film is considered a classic in part because of its unmistakable folk horror aesthetic, which the 4K restoration will enhance. The series recently added a prequel entitled Children of the Corn in 2020, bringing its total to eleven films. None have been able to capture the haunting quality of the original Children of the Corn, which will be all the scarier now that those creepy kids are easier to see.
