Children of Blood and Bone, the New York Times-bestselling novel from Tomi Adeyemi, is being developed as a movie by Lucasfilm in partnership with 20th Century Studios. Adeyemi is a Nigerian-American novelist whose story follows the young heroine Zélie Adebola as she attempts to restore the magic in her kingdom of Orïsha. The West African-inspired young adult fantasy and coming-of-age tale is the first in a planned trilogy, and marks Adeyemi’s debut novel.

Disney broke the news of their Children of Blood and Bone adaptation amid a slew of other big announcements during their 2020 Investor Day, which was held as a four-hour webcast. Disney also used the webcast to push their streaming service Disney+, which finished its first year with impressive subscription numbers that surpassed their own projections.

Previously, Dope director Rick Famuyiwa was set to helm a Children of Blood and Bone adaptation, but there's been no announcement about whether on not he remains attached. It wouldn't be surprising if he was, though, seeing as he has a relationship with Lucasfilm thanks to directing several episodes of The Mandalorian. An adaptation of Children of Blood and Bone is an exciting project for the studio to undertake, so hopefully Famuyiwa sticks with it, and brings the same vision to it that he has his films and Mandalorian episodes.

Children of Blood and Bone was published in 2018 and has been met with rave reviews. Adeyemi has already released Children of Virtue and Vengeance, the sequel to Children of Blood and Bone, and it was also instantly a New York Times bestseller. The third novel of the series is due for release in 2021.
