Chicago PD sees Hank Voight at his best when he is breaking the rules. NBC's police procedural follows the specialized Intelligence unit, led by Voight. A veteran of the force, he has made a name for himself for being ruthless on criminals, especially those who take advantage of kids, women, and the oppressed. Voight runs a small but effective Intelligence team who is loyal to him despite some of his questionable decisions, not to mention his alleged dirty past. More recently, however, he seems to have already softened his edges, which may sound like less trouble for him and Intelligence, but is actually bad for Chicago PD as a whole.

Voight has noticeably lost some of his ruthlessness on Chicago PD season 10. While this makes sense as it shows growth for the character, it doesn't work in the bigger scheme of things. As someone who has gone through a lot, he was never one to show his emotional side, except for anger and frustration. Now, he’s no longer as aggressive in nailing down the police chief's son who has been trafficking underage girls. Had this been the earlier version of Voight, he would undoubtedly stop at nothing to take Sean off the streets. As the leader of Intelligence, his mellowing down ultimately mellows the team's overall stance on crime.

Voight Doesn’t Do Well With Emotional Episodes

Hank Voight with raised eyebrows in Chicago PD

Voight has also gone through a lot over the years, which includes unexpectedly losing his son and close confidant, Al Olinski, who died in prison while serving for a crime he didn’t commit. Voight also tried saving Anna, his civilian informant (CI), but failed miserably. These moments allowed Voight to show vulnerability, but his grief was quickly masked by his need for either revenge or redemption. Voight never dwells on his sadness, and instead uses it as fuel for his next move. So, it's difficult to get on board with a softer, more emotional version of Voight on Chicago PD season 10.

Who Will Pull Voight Back Now?

Voight tends to push the limits when it comes to th rules. In earlier seasons of Chicago PD, he has proven time and again that he has no problem using any available tool and method to achieve justice. This tends to get him in trouble with his superiors, but because he finds a way to justify his actions, he gets away with them scot-free. Previously, Jon Seda's Antonio Dawson balanced things out by pulling Voight back into the light. When he left, he was replaced by Jay Halstead who has also exited Chicago PD. This leaves Intelligence with no one to function as its moral compass.

Given the remaining members of Voight's Intelligence on Chicago PD, there are only two characters who can potentially fill that void. Firstly, Hailey Upton, who has had no issues calling out when Voight is out of line. Secondly, and arguably the fittest to take on the responsibility is Kevin Atwater, who represents everything that is good in the police force. At this point, however, Voight is still operating within the legal boundaries, but it's only a matter of time before he is once again forced to go outside the box in the name of justice.

Chicago PD season 10 airs Wednesdays on NBC.
