While seeing Matt Casey back in Chicago Fire season 11 will always be great, his upcoming return couldn't come at a worse time. Not even an entire season since Jesse Spencer's exit from the One Chicago franchise, he is already tipped to reprise his fan-favorite role as Casey comes home to Firehouse 51. Specific plot details about his Chicago comeback are still scant, but it could do more harm than good regardless of how NBC explains his re-emergence.

Neither NBC nor Wolf Entertainment has commented on Spencer's return to One Chicago. It reportedly has something to do with Taylor Kinney's Chicago Fire exit as Kelly Severide. As long-time poster characters for the show, it makes sense that the first-responder series will look at Spencer to fill the void his co-star temporarily left. Unfortunately, while Casey's come back to help in that regard, it's a bad idea in almost every other aspect of the procedural.

Casey’s Chicago Fire Season 11 Return Disrupts Sylvie’s Attempt To Move On

It's difficult to say what the extent of Casey's upcoming role will be in Chicago Fire. Regardless, however, just because he will be back in Chicago and reunited with his former flame, Sylvie Brett, is already a bad thing. After trying to make a long-distance set-up work, Sylvie and Casey broke up in the Chicago Fire season 11. They did keep the door open for a possible reunion, but the series also showed Sylvie's struggles in moving on. She just started dating another man, and all her efforts and attempts to continue with her life will likely be derailed with Casey back in Chicago.

Since Spencer's Chicago Fire comeback is likely tied to Kinney's absence, it's curious if his role in season 11 will just be in a guest appearance capacity or if it will be a full-time gig. If he's planning on sticking around for the rest of the season (at least), it's curious what the professional ramifications of that will be. Since he left, a lot has already changed in Firehouse 51; he can't simply reclaim his old spot in Chief Boden's team. Stella Kidd has taken over his spot on Truck 81, so if anything, he would function as a visitor or even a floater.

Can Casey & Sylvie Get Back Together In Chicago Fire?

Severide and Kidd's relationship continues to thrive despite a rather traumatic Chicago Fire season 11 full of unexpected twists and near-death experiences. However, they are also the remaining couple who have survived this year's ordeal pretty much unscathed. However, now that they are separated, perhaps NBC can entertain the idea of bringing Sylvie and Casey back together. Their break-up didn't seem to have any finality. Depending on how long Spencer will be in Chicago Fire season 11, he could easily rekindle his romance with Sylvie since they could be working closely together again.

Chicago Fire season 11 airs Wednesdays on NBC.
