Warning! Spoilers for Star Wars: Age of Resistance Special #1

It turns out that Chewbacca’s best partner in combat isn’t Han Solo— it’s Maz Kanata. Long before The Force Awakens, the rebel Wookiee teamed up with Maz, possibly on more than one occasion.

The sequel trilogy infamously left fans wanting more with dialogue alluding to past offscreen events. Whether it was the Knights of Ren’s backstory, the fall of Luke’s Jedi Academy, or Chewbacca’s relationship with Maz Kanata, there was a lot that the expanded universe has to explore through books and comics. When audiences first met Maz during The Force Awakens, she jokingly referred to Chewie as her “boyfriend,” making it seem that they went on a few adventures together. One of their adventures is revealed in a story called “Maz’s Scoundrels” featured in Star Wars: Age of Resistance Special #1, written by Tom Taylor, with art by Matteo Buffagni and colorist Chris O’Halloran.

When Han Solo, Chewbacca, and Maz Kanata fly the Millennium Falcon to find Baron Somareeva to get something back that he stole, things go wrong. Taking Han by surprise, the trio is suddenly in the middle of crossfire. Maz immediately jumps onto Chewie’s shoulders, as they both blast the armed men working for Somareeva. The tall Wookiee helps give the short Maz a better shot in a panel that resembles the Guardians of the Galaxy’s Groot giving Rocket Raccoon a lift. Although Han and Chewie can handle stormtroopers without a problem, it takes a bit more for them to take down Baron Somareeva’s people.

As Maz pays Han the amount she owes him for his help, he takes notice that it’s more money than they agreed upon. The short tale establishes the friendly dynamic that Solo and Chewie have with the owner of Maz’s Castle. Soon revealing that their mission was to retrieve an ancient Sith helmet, it’s clear that Maz has a great sense of trust in her rebel friends. It’s likely this was just one of many adventures that she went on with Han and her “boyfriend” Chewie before the events of The Force Awakens.

Although unassuming in her height, Maz is a powerhouse— especially with the assistance of Chewbacca. Wielding two blasters, with Chewie using his crossbow, they’re able to shoot in nearly every direction. Han’s reaction isn’t included in the panel, but it’s a decent bet that the duo’s quick shooting might’ve embarrassed the scoundrel. Usually, Han would be the one to shoot first, but sometimes Chewbacca is faster on his feet.
