The official Cherry trailer is released. Based on the book of the same name by Nico Walker, the film sees Tom Holland reunite with directors Joe and Anthony Russo, following a trio of Marvel Cinematic Universe installments (most recently Avengers: Endgame). Cherry marks a drastic departure from their previous collaborations, as it tells the story of an Army medic who becomes addicted to opioids and starts robbing banks. Holland in particular is poised to generate attention for his performance as Cherry, shedding the enthusiastic schoolboy persona that defines his Spider-Man in the MCU. Marketing materials have put a focus on his transformation.

With Cherry scheduled to release in February, distributor Apple TV+ has ramped up their promotional efforts, putting together an awards campaign for the film through a collection of character posters depicting Cherry at various points in his life. Audiences also got a small taste of what to expect earlier this month when the first Cherry clip was released, depicting the scene where Cherry joins the Army. Now, the full trailer is here.

The Russos have talked about how Cherry is designed to be like multiple movies in one, an approach hinted at in the trailer. The film is comprised of several elements, including romance, war, and crime. These varying threads are further reflected in the different renditions of "Time in a Bottle" that serve as the preview's soundtrack, as the music fluctuates from soft acoustic guitar to an intense full rock version. All in all, Cherry looks to be a rather ambitious undertaking for the cast and crew, and it will be interesting to see how it turns out. There is the possibility Cherry bites off more than it can chew as it looks to offer an all-encompassing look at its subject's life, but the Russos have balanced huge MCU ensembles in the past, so ideally they'll be able to craft something impactful here.

Cherry is a late entry into this year's Oscar race. It's eligible at the 93rd Academy Awards due to the ceremony taking place in April. It will be fascinating to see if it can gain traction on the awards circuit. Early reactions seem to be positive, including high praise from Robert Downey, Jr. (who obviously has history with Holland). It's still too early to say if Cherry will make a run in any of the major categories, but Holland looks like a potential Best Actor nominee, showcasing his full range in what's poised to be an emotionally grueling performance. Hopefully, Cherry delivers on its promise and becomes one of 2021's first must-see films.
