Avengers: Endgame Directors Cast Tom Holland In Their Next Film

The Russo Brothers' next film, Cherry, casts Tom Holland in a starring role. The trio worked together on three Marvel Cinematic Universe movies.

Tom Holland will reteam with directors Joe and Anthony Russo for the true-life drama Cherry. Holland's Peter Parker of course was a victim of Thanos' snap in the Russos' Avengers: Infinity War, but as he's listed in the credits for the follow-up Avengers: Endgame, it seems he will indeed be returning from the dead (or at least appearing in some capacity).

Holland first appeared as Spider-Man in the Russos' Captain America: Civil War, and participated in that movie's famous airport fight scene featuring what was at that point the greatest congregation of superheroes ever put on-screen. Holland's Peter Parker later headed up his own solo movie, Spider-Man: Homecoming, which was a box office smash with $880 million in worldwide grosses. Parker will return later in 2019 for Spider-Man: Far From Home, after putting in his appearance in Endgame.

Even though the Russo Brothers killed off his character (at least temporarily) in Infinity War, TomHolland is still eager to work with the directing duo again. Variety reports that Holland will team with the Russos for Cherry, a drama film scripted by The Path writer Jessica Goldberg. Based on the autobiographical book by Nico Walker, Cherry tells the true-life story of a former Iraq War army medic with severe PTSD who falls into opioid addiction and begins robbing banks, ultimately being imprisoned (the author is himself awaiting release from prison in 2020).

Before becoming the directors of the MCU's biggest movies, the Russo Brothers cut their teeth in series television, directing episodes of popular sitcoms Arrested Development, Community and Happy Endings. After making their name as directors of such light-hearted shows, the Russos were seemingly unlikely candidates to take on the task of directing the action-packed Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but indeed they succeeded in making the film a hit with $714 million grossed worldwide. The success of that film led to their being assigned directorial duties on Civil War, and then the two massive Avengers films Infinity War and Endgame, the latter of which is projected to top even the blockbuster Infinity War in its opening weekend.

After taking on the huge task of directing four MCU films, including the biggest of all in Avengers: Endgame, the Russos now seem ready to tone things down a bit at least in terms of scale and make a more down-to-earth drama in Cherry. Still, the emotional stakes sound like they will be very high as Cherry tackles the incredibly relevant subject of PTSD in soldiers returning from war, as well as the ongoing opioid crisis. After playing Peter Parker for the Russos, Holland will once again place himself in the directors' hands, though this time the challenge will be much different as he plays a real person struggling with real issues instead of a fantasy superhero battling a giant purple man from space.
