Netflix has revealed a trailer and announced a January 12 premiere date for Season 2 of its Emmy-winning docuseries Cheer. The series premiered in January 2020 and introduced viewers to Navarro College’s celebrated cheerleading program and its decorated coach Monica Aldama. Cheer made headlines in September 2020 when teammate and breakout star Jerry Harris was arrested on charges of producing child pornography.

The Cheer Season 2 trailer sees the cheerleading team’s emotional response to Jerry’s arrest, as well as other conflicts that arise ahead of the 2021 championships in Daytona. In addition to Monica, Season 2 will see the return of several Season 1 cheerleaders, including Gabi Butler, La'Darius Marshall, Lexi Brumback, Morgan Simianer. The new teammates look to be just as dedicated to their craft. “ I don’t know where I’m sleeping tonight,” says one newcomer, “but I know tomorrow at 6:00, I’m going to cheerleading practice.” The trailer also sets up the continued rivalry with Trinity Valley Community College, whose tumbler is “the Simone Biles of cheerleading.” Watch the full trailer below:

Per Cheer’s official synopsis, “As Season 2 opens and the buzz around their newfound stardom threatens to alter the dynamic of Navarro Cheer, the team finds no amount of press frenzy could compare to the challenges they must face when COVID-19 upends the 2020 cheer season, and a serious criminal accusation is levied at one of their teammates.” The nine-episode second season of Cheer premieres on January 12 on Netflix.
