Netflix documentary series Cheer explores the world of competitive cheerleading by following the Navarro College Cheer team and their intense training for the NCA College Nationals in Daytona, Florida. Here's what we know so far about the show's renewal status, and when Netflix viewers might expect season 2 to release.

Directed by Greg Whitely and Adam Ridley (Last Chance U), Cheer offers an emotional look at how becoming part of the Navarro team has been a life-changing experience for kids from difficult backgrounds. Competitive cheerleading also comes with its own set of struggles, however - from brutal injuries to the enormous pressure of performing. In the lead-up to Daytona, members of the 40-strong team must prove themselves to be one of the 20 cheerleaders who are "on-mat" during the competition.

Taking them on this journey is coach Monica Aldama, who combines strict discipline and a fierce desire to win with genuine affection for all her kids. The show also features cheer celebrity and social media influencer Gabi Butler, who must field enormous expectations from both the team and her family. But after the rollercoaster of season 1, can we expect to see more of Cheer on Netflix?

Cheer Hasn't Yet Been Renewed For Season 2

Netflix Cheer Cheerleaders

Netflix typically waits several weeks to a couple of months after a show's release before making a renewal decision, so Cheer season 2 hasn't been announced yet. Given the success of Last Chance U and the fact that Cheer follows a similar format, we believe there's a good chance that Cheer will get a second season - especially given the highly positive response to the show from Netflix viewers.

Cheer Season 2 Release Date

Cheer season 1 was based around the build-up to the Navarro College Cheer Team competing at Daytona in 2019. With the next competition  set for April 2020, it's too late now for Cheer season 2 to follow the team's training for that competition, meaning that it will more likely focus on the season leading up to the 2021 championship. If that happens, Cheer season 2 will likely release in late 2021.

It's possible that a second season might shift focus from the Navarro team (just like Last Chance U moved to a different college in season 3). It would be interesting for Cheer season 2 to focus on Navarro's rivals, Trinity Valley, who are briefly featured in season 1. Trinity Valley are Navarro's only competitor in their category at Daytona, and coach Vontae Johnson expresses his admiration for Monica as a coach - but also his ambition to become even better than her. After a season rooting for the Navarros, it would be interesting to look at the competition from the perspective of Trinity Valley.
