Netflix has finally revealed the release date, cast updates, and other details for Cheer season 2 nearly two years after season 1 came out and turned the series into a global phenomenon. In January 2020, the Navarro College Bulldogs Cheer Team and its coach, Monica Aldama, became reality TV stars with the release of Cheer on Netflix. Notable cast members included Gabi Butler, La'Darius Marshall, Lexi Brumback, Morgan Simianer, and Jerry Harris, to name a few.

Following the release of Cheer, however, Jerry was accused of inappropriate sexual conduct and was subsequently arrested by the FBI. This was a significant blow to Netflix's Cheer given that Jerry had become one of the ultimate fan-favorite stars of the series. Then, the COVID-19 pandemic postponed production of Cheer season 2 even further as most cheerleading championships were canceled. Fans waited a long time for a second. season to be announced, and Netflix has finally released official details now.

Today, Netflix released a brand-new trailer for Cheer season 2, which will premiere on Wednesday, January 12, 2022 on the streaming service. The trailer makes it clear that season 2 will follow not only the Navarro cheerleaders team but also their rivals at Trinity Valley Community College. With that said, most of the fan-favorites from Cheer season 1 will be back, including Gabi and La'Darius. In turn, Jerry will of course not be present for most of season 2. According to Variety, the new season will explore the claims against Jerry and feature interviews with his accusers.

Production on Cheer season 2 started in secret as early as January 2020 following the massive success of the first season on Netflix. Alas, filming was shut down in March 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic rose to new heights. Netflix was only able to resume production in September 2020, which explains why season 2 was so delayed. Producers also had to wait for the 2021 NCAA National Championship to take place given that the pandemic had canceled the 2020 edition of the tournament. Cheer was nominated for six Primetime Emmy Awards in 2020 and won three of them, so fans' expectations are understandably very high for this new season.

There's a two-year gap between seasons 1 and 2 of Cheer, so there's a lot of ground that the show will need to cover. Nonetheless, Reality TV fans are already looking forward to Cheer season 2 now that Netflix has finally released new information about it. If the new season is anything like the first, it will be truly captivating and electrifying.
